Hi,

My Thai wife and I were legally married here in Thailand earlier this year. She will be moving to Canada with me next year on a Permanent Residence Visa (Landed Immigrant). The visa has already been approved.

Will our marriage be recognised in Canada for purposes of health insurance, etc.? Do we have to register at the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok first? Or can we just register when we get there?

Any info would be very useful. :o

I really don't believe you (she) would have received an immigrant visa if your marriage were not recognized. You should probably have a few translations made and then run them through the MFA in Bangkok to make them international legal documents for occasions later when someone want proof of your marriage. I am not from North of the border so do not know your exact rules but USA has no requirement for any registration anywhere. When proof of marriage is required a copy of translated/registered document as above works.

Ditto for the UK. Although for the UK you don't need to get translations stamped by the MFA. A stamp applied by the translation bureau certifying that it's a true translation has always sufficed for us, from initial visa right through to British citizenship.

I cannot see that Canada is any different.
