Phuket official stabbed by accident

PHUKET: -- A municipal official who tried to break up a lovers’ quarrel on Patong Beach yesterday evening is being treated in a Phuket hospital for stab wounds after his stomach was accidentally sliced open by an enraged young woman.

Patong Municipality officer Prakij “Oh” Phenjun was on Patong Beach at about 7:30pm yesterday when he heard a young man and woman yelling at each other.

Seeing that the young woman had a knife in her hand, Mr Prakij, 29, tried to intervene and get the pair to talk their differences through.

Just as he was coming between them, the woman lunged to stab her boyfriend in the hand.

She did manage to cut the boyfriend’s hand, but he only suffered a minor laceration.

Mr Prakij, however, suffered a major laceration to the left side of his abdomen. He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital for emergency surgery for a wound described as “severe”.

Police took the young couple to Patong Police Station for questioning, where 18-year-old Choosak Sawaengpom told officers he went to the beach to try and make up with the object of his affections, a woman he identified only as “Nong Som” (Miss Orange).

Both of the youths said the stabbing was accidental and that Mr Prakij was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. They both agreed to help pay his medical expenses.

As for the cause of her fury, Miss Som said she was furious with Choosak for cheating on her.
