Let Your Computer Help Cure Cancer And Alzheimer

Featured Replies

Stanford University are conducting a research project called Folding@home, where they ask the help of home computer users with doing calculations on proteins and their folding. The research will probably provide important information about various forms of cancer and diseases such as Alzheimer's.

You download a small program from their web site and make a few settings in it. You can set yourself how much processing power the program may use, and other things regarding its use. Your computer will download work units from the University website, and process them. When they are finished, they are sent back to the university.

This way, the university gains access to a huge amount of processing power that would be extremely expensive otherwise, and you as a user can feel proud of doing something to help the advance of science.

I am now running the program on my computer and have set it to 30% processing power, which does not disturb my regular work at all.

If you are interested, go to the following website to learn more about the project and download the software if you think it's a good idea: http://folding.stanford.edu/
