Democrat Party: Thai Politics Still Under Thaksin's Influence

A Democrat Party adviser said the Thai politics next year is still under the shadow of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He advised the government delay amending the Constitution and the amnesty bill and focus on solving economic problems instead.

The Democrat Party's advisory board member Banyat Bantadtan said the monikers given to Cabinet ministers by the media have indicated the government remains closely linked to convicted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

He suggested that the government hold off its push for the passage of an amnesty bill and instead focus on solving economic problems brought on by both internal and external factors.

Banyad added the government must have a concrete plan for post-flood recovery and give reassurances that the country will be safe from flooding this year, as well as try to prevent corruption in public projects to keep internal conflicts at bay.

Regarding the charter rewrite, the veteran politician gave an opinion that the new constitution drafting committee should consist of previous drafting committee members for the 1997 and 2007 charters, with representatives from the private sector, academia, and politicians.

He further stated that then the government should spend a few months clarifying with the public about the appointment process and the role of the drafting committee and holding a public referendum.

Banyad said if the government is able to give clarification on the matter, he believes there will be no political disruptions and conflicts and national reconciliation could be achieved easily.

Meanwhile, the Democrat adviser voiced his concern that the government's insistence to amend the amnesty bill and Section 112 of the Constitution which concerns the protection of the monarchy may trigger further conflicts and add more problems to the country already battered by natural disasters and other problems.

And the Democrats are still too close to their political masters, the wealthiest of the wealthy and the military. Perhaps if the Democrats adopted a policy of independence, of integrity and set an example on issues of corruption, and wrong doing, they could become a viable alternative to Thaksin, to the PTP, to Chart Thai, to BJP etc. Until then, the people will pick the pile that stinks less.

The sad part of it is that the rural poor need an honest figure to represent them and think this bunch of granny sellers is the great hope.

As long as apparently intelligent and educated "farang" forum members also "think this bunch of granny sellers is the great hope" I fear that the Age of Enlightenment is still far away.

Whenever I read some comments in this forum I wonder what blunder a politician has to commit to lose this kind of stout support. Vote-buying, incompetence, lack of leadership, corruption, cronyism and broken campaign promises are apparently not sufficient.

Most are loyalists. That's politics I reckon.

I think it is the political ethics

"May it be immoral, illegal or downright criminal, It is justified if the party benefits from it." Because if the party benefits from it, by their crude and egoistic logic, the "people will benefit".

This alleges that the "party" will work for the benefit of "the people", where in reality in most countries it is a simple scheme to siphon off funds and offer mediocre drop-outs a career and "power".

Does TANN have an internal rule to never actually quote anyone and only paraphrase what people say?

It is a PITA to have to cross-check the TANN paraphrasing against actual quotes from other media outlets...

No need to respond, just bitchin' 'bout incompetent "news" sources...

It's probably difficult to quote something in English that is said in Thai. Even those news sources that do "quote" are probably doing a fair bit of paraphrasing.

Has Mr T finally realized that keeping quiet can actually be beneficial to his cause? I'm sure his excitable opponents on this forum can't wait for him to open his mouth and put his foot in it as he has done on a fair few occasions over the years.

What will be the new 'She's my clone' or 'the UN's not my father'? The longer we wait, the better for him, I guess.

Please have a modicum of decency, that less smelly pile of shit that you refer to is the PM of Thailand and justifies respect! How dare you after all she has done to this great country! Bah!

Except for him being in Singapore a couple of weeks ago with MPs (and allegedly Yingluck) visiting him, and being in Burma just before Yingluck visited there.

He didn't even address her properly as Madame Less Smelly Pile. ;)

I guess the voters went for the pile that had been sprinkled with a more expensive perfum this time around but the true odor seems to be rising from the bottom.

You must be a "garlic eater" when it comes to Thai politics, with a complete lack of awareness of your own smell. Don't you realise that your advice to the Democrats applies more readily to PTP, and that it would make them more palatable to the better educated and hence more affluent voters?

Really ironic that you suggest that the party of the "great unwashed" smells better than the Democrats - perhaps its the splash of perfume recently applied. Note that perfume doesn't remove smell, it merely disguises it.

The good thing is that they can't vote.

The more the rural poor vote for the handout, the further behind they will fall.

The higher the wages become in comparison to other Asean nations, the more quality jobs will be lost.

The more this continues, the biger the nation's debt will become.

The Dems are probably already thining that the country will be in an awful shape come the next election.

There is no quick way to get from A to Z - it's a long, laborious process starting with education, training, getting foreign companies in with higher end technological jobs, investing in Thai technology.

Look at China, Taiwan, South Korea - HTC, BENQ, LG, Samsung etc. they took time but are now leaders in some top areas. In contrast Thailand just provides the labour or the rice to feed. Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam are on the up and will stand to be successful from Asean. Thailand stands a real chance of falling into tier 2 with Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

Thaksinomics is not a great distance from Mugabe's vision.

Another one trotting out the usual mantras with no obvious thought put in. You couldn't be more wrong.

It's a whole lot easier to shoot at an opinion than to have a valid one of your own.

I put mine in writing. You either have the wit to disect it or you don't. I know which my money is on.......
