Temple at Big C?

BUDDHIST BRAINWAVE

Culture Minister Uraiwan Thienthong has suggested the idea of renting an area of 200 square metres in every shopping mall in the nation as a meeting room for young people to take part in religious activites and study Dharma.

“The idea has come from the private sector. Nowadays people have no time to go to temples, only shopping malls, so if we provide the opportunity to them then they can get closer to religion,” K. Uraiwan said.

She explained that her intention was not to “bring temples into malls”, as some might think it wrong for monks to frequent department stores; she wants people to understand that “goodness can be found everywhere”.

Marketing and Public Relations Director, Pariyanuch Na-Takuatung from Big-C Super Centre Plc. told Phuket Post that they have been organising activities both outside and inside the malls for local communities by setting up projects.

“We already cooperate with local schools and other organisations during the festivals and important traditional days such as Loy Krathong and special Buddhist days. It does not have to be only Buddhism. Big-C in Pattani also organise activities related to local lifestyles over there such as providing a Muslim worship room and joining religious activities with local mosques.”

“If the temple idea proves successful then we may try this idea as well,” she added.
