This just in... Bomber Thompson to take over whilst Hird goes for a sabbatical... Neil Craig comes in as an assistant for 2 years along with Simon Goodwin and along with Bomber, Craig will develop Goodwin into a senior coach.

Bomber Thomspon can go suck a bag a d***s, claimed he wasn't interested and then goes onto say today how he was the right man for the job and the only real choice for it...

I'll be surprised if Bomber goes back to being the assistant coach though... I reackon he'll take it from Hird and there'll be blood spilt! (long term bet that one ;) )

You can take anything Bomber says with a grain of salt.

When he was at Geelong "I'm just burnt out and need a spell from coaching".

All the while making a deal to go back with Essendon while Geelong were still

in the finals.

Adam Simpson has signed a three-year deal to become the new coach of the West Coast Eagles.

The West Coast job was vacated by premiership-winning coach John Worsfold in early September and the list of applicants was initially 14 names long.

As Simpson was a deputy under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn, West Coast was forced to wait until Hawthorn finished its 2013 campaign to name its new senior coach.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-10-03/adam-simpson-named-west-coast-eagles-coach-afl/4997590

Ahhh yes I know the scenario well, Neeld was a hot assistant from a premiership club, so much for white hot Sumich.

Seems to be a formula in hiring head coaches....whistling.gif

Well unless you get an ex-coach like Chocco Williams, you have to get them from the assistant coaching pool.

True, being an assistant at a successful club doesn't guarantee success, but it doesn't hurt.

At the end of the day, it's a lottery. I remember David Parkin being asked about whether John Worsfold

would make a good head coach when he was his assistant at Carlton. Parko replied "John has all of the

attributes for a good coach but you can never tell until someone's actually doing the job".

Having a good structure and playing list doesn't hurt either. Chris Scott goes to Geelong and has instant success.

It would've been really hard for any inexperienced coach to to Melbourne, with their list, culture and 2 clowns

like Scwabb and Connolly in charge.

I think Connolly is still the (suspended) football manager. If he is, what a disgrace.

No Connolly who was on a years leave (hehehe) due to his involvement with that little ruckus last year was officially delisted when the new broom swept through the long room a few months back.

Cameron S was the devil at Deeland, he got sacked once, being close to Stynes and co they brought him back so he went about setting himself up as CO for life, trouble was (once credited as being a top CO) his appointments dragged the club into the MCG turf and the BIG honcho's at Docklands came in with an offer the Dees couldn't refuse.

Connolly had been a highly respected footballer and earmarked as a future captain when a knee injury cut is football life very short, he, Cameron S, Stynes and Lyon etc were all there as young guys from around the mid 87 that who took us into a nice period were we played finals ( the Dees were elimination finals specialists, could never Finnish above 4th and for years).

I don't buy going for top assistants, seems were one of the few codes that do that, this thing is fairly new to aussie rules, even Kennedy a through and through Hawk coached North. Whats wrong with Eade? he was my choice failing getting Roos? and im still not so sure Roo's would be better, but they know better than me at AFL house.

Connolly was still employed by Melbourne. In fact signed a 2 year contract this year.

Was moved from Football Manager to general manager of development.

Just read that he has been let go (paid out).

What's the betting it was Roos who had him chopped. Again, disgraceful board decision to not only keep him on,

but to give him another 2 years.

No no no will it was reported in that paper every one respects and loves but cannot afford to buy now, "The Age" that Mr Connolly was not going to return to the club and in effect payed out, that was at least 6 weeks ago perhaps it wasn't official as in official but it came from official sources, the dear man knew he had been chopped and so did well most of us Dee supporters.

Yes BM I kinda recall Swans seem to fly under the radar and pick up so so's who turned out pretty good, some thing like the Bunnings way of choosing employees which seems to work very well.

Actually we don't need a lot to get us moving up the ladder, just a couple of decent midfielders to give jones a hand, yes yes I know we were merda but seriously lot had to do with the guys running the joint, I recon Needle had the kids walking on a tight rope, there are enough decent early draft pics there coming into that 50/60 games where it starts to click and a back up ruckman but plz not whats his face...

Ben Mc Evoy has gone to the Hawks NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. He was our only recognised ruckman, one of out best players and touted as the next captain.

I'm just listening to that on Trade Radio. Bit of a surprise that one?

edit. they got Shane Savage and Hawthorns first pick at #17

Crikey, Mcevoy is only 24.

Yep that came as a real shock, no one saw that coming. Yes still only 24 and amongst the top ruckmen in the country.

Ahhhhhh that's a relief, reading the sun on line this morning looks like Jolley is Saints bound chooka...hey great player played in 2 premierships guys got talent, great replacement for the guy you lost don't you think?rolleyes.gif Watter and his mate Pelchan safe for now so they say but hiring an independent consulting firm to keep an eye on things down there mate.

My man Roos says that with free agency the way it is heading clubs will likely trade top players who do not want to renew contracts 1 year before as did Bulldogs last year with Brian Lake, saying the Hawks could have received 2 first round draft picks for Franklin if he had been put on the market last year, he sites the American system in basketball, it happens in soccer often.

The only thing with that trade it still will require the consent of the player involved of no deal.

Cat Joel Corey has retired.

Dew looks likely to have to see out his contract at the Swans which means Roos will do his full 3 years maybe a 4rth.

Been out of the loop for a few days, travelling around. Jolley would be going against their commitment not to recruit players over 26 or to touch free agents until at least 2016. However having said that the saints no longer have a recognised ruckman.

Another club Richmond to field stand alone VFL side, there hardly standing alone, they are the reserves, now 10 years on we see that the AFL has managed to "take over" the VFA. I thought at the time to scrap the reserves was a dumb move and it's now proven, clubs want direct involvement with how there players that are not in the firsts are managed.

What come out of it all was a reduced list, wonder how long before clubs pressure the AFL to increase list numbers.

Tiger Robin (the speedster) Nahas won't be offered a new contract and there looking to off load the guy.

Herald Sun reports your man Watters in for the long haul chooka, and there's talk of a contract extension, my my how wheels turn fast in footy. Obviously they haven't spoken to you lately.

Neeld knocks back assistant job at the Blues, thought the guy was unemployable.

That underground gangster Daniel Kerr has retired, well now he can devote all his time to what he likes best doing, if there eve was a prize given for the snekiest, chekkiest, smart arse, doggiest looking face on the plant he would win in a canter.

Chapman undergoes a medical at Essendon today, i recon he is about the best around looking for a new home event at 31.

St Kilda coach Scott Watters came close to losing his job after an internal review into the club's dysfunctional football operation revealed the depth of disharmony within the club and widespread disenchantment with the senior coach.

The Saints board last week debated terminating Watters' services despite the fact the coach had supported the review into the football operation in the belief it would lead to him winning a contract extension.

St Kilda considered approaching 2004 Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams to step into the senior coaching role.

Watters is hardly in it for the long haul, hung onto his job by his teeth and is allowed to see out 1 season left on his contract. The saints don't have the money in the Bank this year after a poor performance and still haven't signed a major sponsor for 2014. Not financially stable to go hunting for another coach so just let this tool watters see out his time. 2014 has been written off with an expected 6 wins during the rebuilding year.

FREMANTLE - October 16

The boldest move the Dockers could make is this: Get Nick Riewoldt from St Kilda for a two-year tilt at a premiership with Fremantle. The Saints have already shown they are prepared to trade for the future and it seems no one is off limits. The Dockers could package together pick 16, Josh Mellington, Viv Michie and even young ruckman Jack Hannath for the four-time All Australian. The Dockers could throw in Alex Silvagni if required. The Dockers have been linked with possible trades for James Podsiadly and Scott Gumbleton but if the 2013 Grand Finalists really wanted to send shudders through the AFL they should move heaven and earth for Riewoldt. - Alex Malcolm

would have to put him on a leash as he likes to cover a lot of ground, and still commands a lot of respect (always 2 V 1)

Yes, Kerr might've been a cheeky bugger with a dubious background, but what a player. *When IMO, the Eagles had the best

following division (Judd, Cousins, Kerr and Cox) in the games history, he wasn't out of place with any of them.

Quite often, he was the one who got it to Judd and Cousins who then took off with it.

Sad to see the little champ go.

*I know Brisbane had Voss, Ackermanis, Black and Co but didn't have a ruckman like Cox.

Hawthorn's 2008 premiership player Xavier Ellis will join West Coast as a free-agent signing, in a deal set to be finalised on Wednesday.

Ellis, 25, a high draft pick whose eight years at Hawthorn were marred by injury, is expected to sign with the Eagles, where he will be coached again by Adam Simpson, the new West Coast coach who has been instrumental in recruiting Ellis to West Coast.

Some jornos have nothing to write about so they come up with crap like this, what a backwards step, as someone said where would you play him? Freo if they want to win the flag next year need every player to lift and be hungry as the Hawks were this year, and to get a player or two who can ram it down the forwards throats, another big tall wont do that much for them a few mozzies on the ground a far better option.

Well chooka if your right what a backwards step, as I said earlier most coaches are sacked these days so the clubs factor in a 1 year payout, shows you how far behind you guys are, as for rebuild hmmmm....

The fact is several clubs are perianal loosers, and the Dees are one of them but and I mean but we managed a few times to string together a good period were we picked up 2 hat tricks and several double as in flags the rest of the time we were crap like the Saints, Kanagroos and the Bulldogs only the Hawks have moved forward to become an elite club, I keep say this, time to create many winners in aussie rules or the AFL will be putting there hand in there pockets way more often to rescue clubs.

I don't agree. I think Freo's main deficiency is a big target to help Pav out. Mayne is a leading forward who provides a lot of pressure when the ball hits the ground. They already have 2 of the best small forwards in the game in Ballantyne and Walters.

Ballantyne had a shocking GF and Walters was serviceable but was injured 6 weeks before the game and never fully recovered.

Kepler Bradley who was their other target missed the season leaving Pav, who missed a fair bit of footy due to injury and suspension to try and do it all by himself.

I think Freo really dropped the ball by not getting Mitch Clarke from Brisbane 2 years ago when they squabbled over a draft pick.

IMO, in a perfect world Freo would love to have 1 more tall forward and another big defender to replace Zac Dawson.

Let's face it, they weren't that far away.
