Tricor = fenofibrate, available under a number of local brand names

Tricor is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories and is currently protected by a patent that prevents any generic Tricor from being manufactured.

However, if you search the Internet for "generic Tricor," you will find a number of companies selling it. The fact is that these medicines may be fake, substandard, and potentially dangerous. You should not buy any generic Tricor until there is an approved generic available.

It should be noted that there are several legitimate, FDA-approved versions of generic fenofibrate. However, these medications are not technically equivalent to Tricor, due to a few important differences.

The generic versions are not available in the same strengths as Tricor. Also, the formulation of the generic products is significantly different. For example, Tricor can be taken with or without food. Some of the generic fenofibrate medications must be taken with food (since taking them on an empty stomach decreases the absorption of the medication). While these generic medications may serve as alternatives to Tricor, they cannot be considered to be generic versions of the medication.

When Will There Be a Generic Tricor?

There have already been a few contentious legal battles about the possibility of generic versions of Tricor. As the result of a settlement of one such legal battle, a generic version was expected to become available as early as March 2011. However, that date has come and gone, with no generic Tricor yet. The settlement did stipulate that certain circumstances could delay that date until July 2012.

Is Fenofibrate a Generic Tricor?

No, it isn't. (http://cholesterol.e...nofibrates.html) Fenofibrate is Tricor's active ingredient, not a generic version of the drug. People often make the mistake of referring to a drug's active ingredient as its "generic name." However, a medicine's generic name is different than a generic version of it. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off patent and another company (besides the original manufacturer) must have made the product. None of the currently available generic fenofibrate medications are equivalent to Tricor.
