BlackBerry maker to focus on business users after losses grow

SAN FRANCISCO: -- BlackBerry maker RIM said Thursday that it will refocus on business users after its long bid to battle Apple and Google resulted in another quarter of mounting losses.

The Canadian smartphone maker said it lost 125 million dollars in the fourth quarter compared to a profit of 934 million dollars a year earlier.

Revenue fell to 4.2 billion dollars last quarter from 5.2 billion dollars a year ago as shipments of BlackBerry smartphones fell 21 per cent to 11.1 million from the previous three month period.

With the company also gaining little traction for its Playbook tablet, it had decided to return to its roots by serving the business customers on which the company was built, said Research in Motion’s newly-appointed chief executive Thorsten Heins.

"We plan to refocus on the enterprise business and capitalise on our leading position in this segment," he said in a conference call following the earnings report.

"We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we try to be everybody’s darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."
