Have 4 hamsters that we keep in a big plastic box. Yesterday, one was found wandering around in the room. Can't work out how it escaped, unless it can jump, but never saw any evidence of that.

Anyone with a similar problem?

I am not sure if you are aware of this but you can get specialized hamster cages. These allow the hamsters to see outside and have toys such as wheels and plastic tubes they can utilize to pass the time. (Unlike their human equivalents, hamsters dont have the luxury of being able to spend all day on the internet).

My 4 year old daughter has one, I'll find out the brand, I'm sure it wasnt that expensive as she bought the set up out of her pocketmoney. Have to say a big plastic box does seem a bit cruel. Unless you are planning on eating them or something...

Actually, was going to reply once I have a photo of the new security arrangement. Will post one here when I have it ready.

However, the answer was simple enough- bought a 1/2 meter of that thin steel mesh, and moulded it into the shape of a lid to go on the box. problem solved. Still don't know how Houdini managed to scale smooth plastic with her little feet, but she's not going awol again.

My wife did buy a "proper" hamster cage while we were thinking of a solution, and they HATED it. Stopped doing anything except eating and sleeping- never touched the wheel, except to sleep in. They're back to their usual happy selves now that they're back in the big box.

Tip- our hamsters love rolling around in the sand, but the dish kept getting full of the cage litter, so I bought a 10 baht plastic pet food bowl with high sides, and they love it- sand galore without wood shavings.

are hamsters and guinea pigs the same?...if so they're mighty good eatin' inna stew with quinoa and the native andean seasoning called quirquina...

No, not the same. Hamsters are about the same size as a mouse, but without the tail, and are sooooooo cute. They're even cute sleeping, awwwwwwh.

Would take a lot of them to provide a decent meal.

Takes a lot of pork balls to fill a skewer too, but they manage.

I thought you were on a diet? I'm sure a couple of hamster falafels in a toasted pita bread would be healthier than what you must have been eating when you got up to 100KG?

come to think of it the arab guy did look a bit like Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction...I don't think that he liked westerners much and I expected a pronouncement at any time as he expertly prepared the sandwiches: 'and you will know that I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!'

but he had the best falafel sandwiches in Jeddah...and I indicated as much with lots of finger waggling (No.1!, No.1! ) but he wasn't impressed...

Haha, wonder if he was also on a diet like our OP is. I dont think I have ever weighed 94KG, let alone 100. Must be a lot of saturated fat in hamsters cheesy.gif
