MRTA offers real-time parking vacancy data

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand has made available the real-time data on parking vacancy at all nine park and ride sites.

Kritaya Sumitanant, a deputy governor of MRTA as acting governor, said that this should enhance convenience to commuters, who can now check for the vacancy through their smart phones.

In cooperation with the Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Office, the data is now available through:

1. www.mrta.co.th

2. www.itsotp.net

3.m.itsotp.net (for mobile phones).

MRTA now operates 9 park and ride sites in Lat Phrao, Ratchadapisek, Huay Kwang, Thailand Cultural Centre (2), Phetburi, Sukhumvit 8, Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre and Sam Yan.

At this rate, they'll be catching up to Japan soon. In Japan, they have parking lots that not only tell you there are spaces available, but will guide you to the vacant spot. Hey, maybe they could use the 1,000,000 iPads that the govt is buying to build an app like this! tongue.png

Central Chaengwattana has a system similar to this now. At the entry to each floor it tells you how many spaces are available and each parking space has a red or green light above it so you can easily find the empty slots. Pretty impressive stuff I thought.

Bet people still park across other vehicles on the week-end though!

The parking space indicator system with the green light has been in operation in many places in Sydney for some time, so it was great to see it finally surfacing here at home (Central Rama 9 has it too) - linking this data to a web site, or maybe even into Google Map or Google Earth is probably the next step, if it has not been done already. I know we have traffic info in Map - and it is often quite handy.

Parking across people in the shopping centres here is a quite normal practice and as long as people remember to leave the car with the steering striaght, out of gear and with the hand-brake off, its fine. I dont have any issue with it at all, and have had to use that parking method many times myself.
