BTS, subway to run 24 hrs

Published on December 23, 2005

Bangkok’s Skytrain and subway systems will operate around the clock from New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day, officials said yesterday.

The Energy Ministry has also ordered petrol stations to open 24 hours a day until January 5 to help commuters during the festive period.

The subway will offer discount fares on New Year’s Eve. Passengers will be able to travel for Bt10, with children and the elderly paying just Bt5. Subway passengers will also receive a free calendar during the festive period.

The Bangkok Transit System (BTS) will extend the validity of all Bt100 one-day passes bought on New Year’s Eve until 6am on New Year’s Day.

The BTS will join forces with the Thailand Protestant Churches Coordinating Committee to organise “Christmas on the BTS Skytrain”, featuring carol singing by students from various Christian schools and churches. Choirs will entertain passengers on trains on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day from 3pm to midnight.

They have done this every year since I moved here and, I think, since the Skytrain first opened in 1999.

I remember on New Year 2001 (actually 1/1/2002) I tried to get out of a train at Nana Station and had to actually push a Thai man off the train before I could get out! And this was at 3 in the morning!!!

Just in case you'll be depending on this service to get home after the countdown ... make sure you have transportation FROM the BTS/subway, 'cuz a couple of years ago I found myself (along with what seemed to be hundreds of others) stranded at the BTS station, as there was a scarcity of taxis. People were getting so desperate that even tuktuks were being choosy and turning people down. (Mai pai... too far..) I know someone who actually walked home... from the World Trade Center to Ramkhamhaeng!

Meanwhile, the London Underground is closing down on New Years Eve because of a strike.

:o

Actually, they didn't close the London Underground in the end, only a few stations here and there. I guess their conscience got to them...

Hopefully this BTS / MRT arrangement can be extended to be year-round though...
