Why Won'T Usb Media Player Work With Tv?

Featured Replies

i brought back a media player from the US. This allows you to play any file located on your USB thumb drive on your TV. The media player connects to the TV by either an HDMI cable or by an AV cable (red/yellow/white) the way a DVD player does. For some reason, I cannot get it to work with either (OLD) TV in the apartment we are renting in Thailand by connecting with the AV cable. Any idea why? (It is not the voltage)

Isnt the US a different system ?....ie PAL vs NSTC or waht ever its called ?

Yeah !! your on the wrong forum with this one, you want internet, computers etc etc forum, I think it's to do with different formats. I have the same trouble with downloads, some play on the computer some won't, others play computer but not on usb plug into tv.

NTSC but it should matter

You need to check your TV to see if is universal (PAL/NTSC). Most TVs in Thailand are but you might check if there is a menu choice on the TV, if its not that old to not have a menu.

//edit - what are the symptoms? If NTSC on a PAL TV you would get something on the screen but out of sync & color.

hi i got it to work by only connecting the yellow and red cables not the white.

this thing is awesome by the way. pick one up when you go home, i have not seen them here.

with the hdmi cable on a hi-def tv you can watch ur downloaded files via usb and the quality is superb.

it replaces cable seemlessly besides football.

Why don't you just plug the thumb-drive straight into the TV's USB?

You can down load all you content to any external hard drive and plug it in to your TV via the USB connection and it will play the content just the same. Also music, view pictures and etc.

I do the same thing, but the fact that the OP was trying to connect via AV implied that the TV doesn't have an HDMI port, let alone a USB port. He/she wrote 'I cannot get it to work with either (OLD) TV in the apartment we are renting in Thailand by connecting with the AV cable'.

The OP also wrote 'pick one up when you go home, i have not seen them here'. Actually you can buy media players from most malls and electronic shops throughout Thailand, I don't want to ignite an 'HDMI vs USB' debate though.

if u r using the usb drive on ur tv u will not get as good quality as the media player + hdmi cable in my experience.

I have a Western Digital media player. It's way better than what my Samsung TV offers (a relatively new TV with USB input and media player incorporated). The TVs interface is not as slick and several file types can't be played. Like MKV. Plus, it's difficult to deal with subtitles, etc.

But! Easy to just plug in the USB drive and not deal with the media player and ANOTHER remote control!

Can you provide any details re: the exact make/model of media player and TV? Does the media player have an internal hard disk drive?

What file type(s) are you trying to play?

When did this media player last function properly for you?

I assume you are using an auxiliary input on the TV which you've verified works with other devices, like a DVD player?

My nearly two-year old Samsung TV plays everything off the USB port, including FAT32 and NTFS, using 1 TB HDD, including MKVs (and SRTs) and 1080/BR content. No need for a media player these days unless you have some sort of very unusual requirements.
