Connection Stops Working After Not Using It

OK, i have checked my ip address with whatismyip.com and then restarted my computer. If it is a dynamic address then the ip number should have changed, right? Well, it didn't change after reboot. I also tried turning the modem off and on, disabling and enabling and still got the same ip address.

the static IP likely refers to the static IP assigned to the computer from the router, rather than the IP from the ISP.

My best guess is that you are virussed up or malwared up - do a complete online scan with trend online virus scan (google it) and run any adware programs you might have like adware, spybot etc... before going any further. Spyware is often badly written, or employs devious tricks that make it unstable.

Also phone your ISP to check that they do not have a policy of cutting the connection after a period of disuse.

Unlikely since i run virus scans every day and adware & spybot scans every two days. Also, this occurs on two different computers. Both hooked up to the same modem.

the Ji-net website claims there is no disconnection but I will phone and check anyway.

Well, after restart this morning the IP address is different and the proxy ip is the same.

If I have to get another router/modem I want to go wireless capable, so that customers with laptops (and if I get one myself) can use the internet as well. Any recommendations as to brand/models?

hi'

unless you change your modem, you'll get this timing stuff ...

don't need to reboot, go to control panel/admin stuff/services

and restart the "dns client" and the dhcp client" services, this should work

and it's alot faster than to reboot.

there is a soft that reconnect you if the line is down .. forgot the name ..

OK, found this under the PPP configuration screen: should this be on automatic reconnect? Or is it not part of the issue?

In addition to comments by Francois - you could try forcing your PC to do this automatically

Start > Run > type "services.msc"

Right Click DHCP Client > Recovery Tab and change

First Failure = Restart the Service

You could change all to "restart" this should save you having to do this manually in future.

D-Link, Netgear or Linksys are well known brands. Don't go for the cheaper brands offered by the ISP's.

D-Link DSL-G604T for ~ 6000 Baht is a combination of an ADSL modem, 4 LAN Ethernet cable hub, and a wireless hub.

You may need an outdoor antenna if you want to cover more than 300m (or less if the radio waves travels thru concrete).

Well, francois and rio666uk that seems to have done the job! I haven't noticed not being able to connect but then the real test will come tomorrow when the computer sits idle for a couple of hours. I'll keep you posted.

You guys are great! :D

Thanks Lom, have you seen this modem/hub available in Samui?

Sorry, no I havn't seen it on display here. But it is one of D-Link's bestsellers so I guess some

bigger computer shops here may stock it.

But just go to your friendly computer dealer round the corner :o and you will have one

from surath or bkk within a few days.

I did so, paid a deposit of 1000 baht , and got it 3 days later..

I ecountered the same problem, it started only 2 days ago, with nothing changed in my configuration.

I am using a DLINK 604 adsl modem/router with 2 computers attached to it. both running XP and Zonealarm free.

As my suspicion went to the software firewall first i started reading the zonealarm forums.

As a result i put my router dhcp ip adress into the trusted zone of zonealarm, no problems since

Since you get the error when trying to repair the connection (and since the IP address should be coming from the DHCP server on the router), there are a few things you can still do if the suggestions about auto-restarting the DHCP service doesn't work.

1. Do both PCs crap out at the same time. If not, then it suggests it's on the PC side, not on the router side, so to be happening on both PCs suggests a software issue (like the suggested issue with Zonealarm, which has me wondering if that's also my problem since I'm running Zonealarm myself.)

2. If it's simply the DHCP that's failing, you can switch to static IP addresses within your home network, rather than relying on the DHCP client. (OK unless the PC is a notebook, and is often used on other networks).
