I detest JJ Market, and yet it is a place that occasionally you have to go to because you know that there is a high chance that something you need to buy will be found there. On venturing there yesterday on the hunt for a particular pet accessory (mai mee mai mee all day long of course) it occurred to me that JJ is the perfect microcosm of Thai Society.

Whether it be the hard working industrious Thais making the place tick; the front that pretends to be a tourist haven and yet is basically one giant rip off joint for all farangs; the bribery and corruption at the very core of it's being, the poor classes struggling to make ends meet, in plain view but not seen by the majority, the entrepreneurial back lane stall holders taking a chance to then be swamped with hundreds of "me too" stalls making all of their existence harder.

For me the pet store area really is a national shame for many reasons. The stall holders who treat the animals like sacks of rice; the industry behind them breeding diseased dying animals for a tiny profit, the people wandering around poking, stroking, and worse still actually buying these poor wretched animals thinking that a 3 week old puppy with a blistered eye is oh so cute. Worse of all though is that there is no one doing anything about this and it is accepted (adored?) by the general population. They will be a huge amount of the population who will be disgusted by it, but they would never do anything about it for so many reasons. They put up with things because against such an adversary as the JJ market owners, they have no voice even if they thought to use it. As for me, if I am there and see farangs about to buy one I try everything I can to stop them (subtlety of course in fear for my life).

JJ shows everything that is great about Thailand, but also everything that is bad as well. Thoughts?

Our research supports your hypothesis, though we disagree that the market is a "rip off joint for all farangs".

Now I would like to see this research - do you have a website?

And I agree, it is not a rip off joint for all Farangs. Some of them some of the time if they are not paying attention.

I like JJ Market. I just wish it were a night market instead. The only problem I have ever had with it is it is too hot walking around during the day. The hot weather is by far my biggest complaint about Thailand in general as well, so I guess the comparison works for me...

Specifically re the Pet areas...

I dont like the live pet for sale area, I find it rather distressing, so avoid it.

I think anyone buying from there is simply perpetuating the problem.

That's what I tried to explain to Louloute, Gros bébé, Pepette, and Massikounette, but they absolutely refuse to be vegetarian bah.gif

So I go there to get their cow skin "bones treats" every month

Pet area for treats etc is not bad as long as you buy only from shops that do not sell live animals. As said, I went hunting for something specific and the only shop that had something close was an Indian run stall with dogs for sale and our conversation was;

"What kind of dog?"

"a Husky"

"Is it big or small dog?"

"You have one over there for sale. You know what a Husky is?"

"husky is small dog. How many small dog you have"

"HUsky puppies are small, they grown big. Do you seriously not know that? you sell Husky to people and not tell them they get bigger?"

"I not know. They small dog now"

I walk out pushing the cretin out of the way, without supporting his shop no matter how much I needed said item.

yes, that would be a problem.

All puppies are small and look cute....How many people buy the dog and get the 'it will only be small dog' routine?

I have had a couple of rats myself and they are very friendly, intelligent critters. They certainly do not like to be alone! The problem with rats is that they only live a few years at most and you get quite attached to them.

I even have a problem seeing rats crammed into tiny cages these days.

I had 5 rats: 3 females; Debian, Lady, Twattie, and 2 males Poupoune and Dajan.

I even took Poupoune with me here. His last days were so hard because the vet did not believed in euthanasia and he suffered so much. He died a year ago and now rest in a temple in Punawithi where I buried him crying.gif

Unfortunately I was never able to find another rat here / or convince friends to fly me some from France, I have been missing rats ever since, so I took on soi dogs, but despite the short life I prefer the relationship with rat than dogs thumbsup.gif

Does twattie mean something different in French than English ?

If you want rats there's plenty here if you can catch them.

It might be OK for snakes, but surely you'd not just neck it there, raw?

Raw rat? Seriously?

I thought the cricket sandwiches got to the boundary, but there's obviously a lot more beyond what I consider palatable.
