I don't think I'll ever refer to the rain as piss. :D

Well, one often hears the expression 'It's pissing down rain' but I've never heard rain called 'piss'.

That term is reserved exclusively for beer. :o

Its more often said as "Its pissing down WITH rain"...not as above....just keep you head covered... :D

Wow I sit hear and read all these playful little slaps and then some numb nut gets his panties in a bunch because he cant take it. Here is a couple of $$ go buy yourself something pretty.

Just a few points to correct you on here....

Numb nuts is actually spelt Numnuts......

The term is Knickers in a knot ....not panties in a bunch The only people I know who call knickers panties are women.

the little smiley at the end of the post signifies it was a post made in jest....Ulysess and I have become sparring partners recently, we take the piss and give as good as we both get....mostly in jest

get a life or get over it :o:D:D (3 smilies for you)

Elvis never had the global influence that the Beatles did...

I'm going to hate myself for this, but, Elvis wasn't fit to lick the bottom of the Beatle's shoes clean. :D

I agree. Elvis was cool and all but The Beatles were, well The Beatles.

On the raining thread someone said that it was pissing this afternoon. I think I also read someone say something about being pissed on.

"I am a mutt of Irish, Scottish, British, German stock. I think I can handle a few drinks. And just to keep you comfortable, 1st round is on me! "

so would that leave you being a stingy, smelly alcoholic with no sense of humour???????

:D

I said Irish was in there. :D

No one has mentioned that the King was born in the States.

I will confess that I do tend to avoid loud people who are sober. This tends to include a few Americans - I haven't met ALL of them of course, and possibly I am prejudiced by having worked for some loud back stabbing two faced yanks years back (are New Yorkers American? :D ). Good and bad all over. And who am I to criticise, I am loud and obnoxious when drunk - which in Thailand used to be a lot :o

The GERMANS however were a complete revelation to me when in Thailand - I had never MET any before in Europe, let alone been out drinking with Germans I liked. What has been particularly interesting and made them (for me) reassuringly "normal" is that bits of Germany no one outside the country has ever heard about (or cares about) dislike and are rude about other similar bits of Germany - for reasons folk have long since forgotten. Exactly like home really :D

Not what I was saying, just that as a rule of thumb if I can work out that you are an American from 20 paces then you are unlikely to encounter me. Somewhat of a stereotype I know, but their is a reason for stereotypes :D - And as I said, spent a year working for a New York head office :o Never again!. I still remember the staff handbook from the US company - when travelling ON BUSINESS and you are on an aeroplane that has been hijacked, do not discuss religion or politics with the hijackers, I guess as a Tourist you would be ok? :D . The suspicious package advice included advice not shake or open a suspected parcel bomb. Sometimes you just can't make it up :D

Australian kidnapping a 'mistake'

January 11, 2006

THE Palestinian militants who kidnapped an Australian teacher in Gaza last month have revealed they released him because he was not American.

Brian Ambrosio, originally from Wangaratta in Victoria, was taken hostage by gunmen in the Gaza Strip on December 21 while driving to a private American school where he is deputy principal.

The kidnappers released Mr Ambrosio the same day, together with a Dutch colleague who also was detained.

The militants, members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, have told the ABC they had the teachers under surveillance for weeks, but mistakenly believed they were US citizens.

"We moved on them early in the morning," one of the gunmen said.

"We'd had them under surveillance for about a month.

"Their nationality was the main reason they were released because they weren't the nationalities that we were after."

Mr Ambrosio and his colleague Hendrik Taatgen were not harmed by the kidnappers.

There has been a spate of abductions in Gaza, with more than a dozen foreign aid workers and journalists taken.

The kidnappers forced Mr Ambrosio and Mr Taatgen to make a video calling for the release of the militant group's leader, Ahmed Sadat, from a Palestinian jail.

They said that by kidnapping what they thought were Americans, they had hoped to put pressure on the Palestinian Authority.

"We believe the Palestinian Authority is under American and Israeli pressure. That's why we tried to pressure them this way," one of the militants said.

Mr Ambrosio and his colleague were forced from their car as they approached the school in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip and then were bundled into another vehicle.

Both have said they were treated well by their abductors.

edit: Inappropriate comment deleted re Thai Royal Family........ udon

I don't want any misunderstandings here, my comment was about Elvis the king, NOT the King of Thailand. HRH has my utmost respect.

I have noticed some poking fun at us yanks on this forum and I know a lot of it is just joking. However I got to thinking about it and wondered if there are some people in Thailand who would rather not be friendly with a Yank. I am not posting this to start any @%^$, just wondering. I have joked with one of my friends that when I move to Thailand if I want Thai friends I will need to speak Thai and if I want any other friends I should speak with a British accent. So, really I am curious if I really will encounter such a person?

You should never ever admit you are american - unless your on mars - not too popular on planet earth....! :o

Been a Canadian, I am regulary taken as an American, and once I let them know I am Canadian, (I generally tell them I live next door) They (Austalians are the worst) start hitting on how terrible the Yanks are. I have one standard response. Have you ever met an American? If yes, was he/she nice, friendly, well mannered? Once they answer and it is always "yes" I say the American people I know are really nice too, it's the govnment that's wrong.

So it's our fault if people don't have a sense of humour? Aussie's are not racist, we hit on everybody!

a slightly different tack here...

(i'm going to talk in sweeping generalities here - so please excuse that - it's a general point i'm making)

i think some nationalities are more able to 'take a slagging' than others. for example, it seems to me that the aussies and the irish are used to taking a slagging because to a large extent that sort of thing is part of the culture of those countries - and certainly part of the national sense of what is humorous (and can make for an extremely entertaining night out!).

the brits aren't quite as good at taking a 'personal' slagging - but they're great at slagging off their government (even if they voted for them), the royal family (whether or not they think it's a good thing), their mates/colleagues, etc etc.

i think what is sometimes different with americans is that they aren't used to that slagging thing. i was in a group a while ago that included an american who was getting really naffed off that others were slagging george bush/america's foreign policy etc. they really weren't being serious about it, but he took it really badly. he didn't realise that they do the same for their own country's politicians, etc and it was nothing personal towards anyone - certainly not him...

i don't think anyone should have to hide their nationality when they travel - mixing it up is part of the joy of it... i'd just suggest that you be prepared to understand there are differences in cultures (including how different peoples interact) - then you'll have a great time!

have a good trip...

I agree with you Lily, except that a lot of what passes as "slagging" of Americans is really vicious and derogatory. I have never felt the need to be a nationalist or patriotic in any way, but I'm really tired of the common Brit/European superiority trip.

Say you're Canadian! :D

Nowadays, in their book, traveling under an other identity makes them a terrorist :D

Feel free to do so! :D

All that freedom talk and after alllll these years, people still use my native country as a cover when traveling...

Makes me wanna go take a cr@p right at the border.

So, then if I want to be your friend I shouldn't tell you I'm a Yank? Oops! Blew that all to h3ll. :D

Right. You are exactly the type I'm talking about in the post above. There are all kinds of people in New York, of every race, creed, color, and musical taste on earth, and yet you've come to this decision based on the people with whom you worked; I'm really glad you've decided to stay away from me :D

And by the way, there are some really hard-to-believe scenarios from England as well. For starters, there doesn't seem to be a shortage of loud, obnoxious, ignorant, and arrogant Brits getting drunk and abusing people in this country.

There's a big difference between taking the piss and hatred.
