[Myanmar] Mitchell Arrives In Burma To Assume Ambassador Post

Derek Mitchell, the newly appointed US ambassador to Burma, arrived in the country on Wednesday to assume his new post, according to a press release by the US embassy in Rangoon. Mitchell previously served as the first US special representative and policy coordinator for Burma, a position created by President Barack Obama as part of his policy of engaging with the country’s military-dominated government. The US has not had an ambassador in Burma since 1990, when it downgraded diplomatic relations in response to the former junta’s refusal to honor the results of elections held that year.
