Thailand'S Dsi To File Case Over Useless Bomb Detectors

"The DSI would give the agencies a little more time before it would submit the report on its probe to the National Anti-Corruption Commission."

I am a bit confused here. Who are they filing the case against?? The manufacturer or the military morons who bought it ?? Any real investigation into the financial trail of this affair is going to turn up some serious backhanders with the resultant loss of face. So cannot have that......

First, DSI will have to get pass her dead body:

When news of the fraudulent nature of the GT200 devices became public in 2010, Pornthip defended the use of the devices, even if they were proven ineffective. She noted, “I do not feel embarrassed if the bomb detector is proven ineffective. Personally, I have never handled the device myself. But my people have used it and it is accurate every time. Long long time ago, people believed that the Earth is flat and anyone who said otherwise faced execution. Things which are not visible does not necessarily mean they do not exist.”[14] As of March 2011, an official English language translation of Dr. Pornthip's autobiography, containing her side of her life story and most famous cases is currently being reviewed for publication from Singapore.

Director of the Forensic Science Institute, Dr Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunant, followed up by purchasing six units of the GT200 at Bt1.1 million per set.

An inspection of the scene of bloody clashes between police and the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has found no explosive residue, renowned forensic expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand said yesterday.

“Our team has used a GT200 substance detector and found no substance used in making bombs. We’ve already checked the clash scenes and the bodies and clothing of the injured victims,” she said.

However, she said the detector had collected chemicals from the scenes and victims that could be used for comparisons later.

also

“This type of device works by detecting the magnetic signal [of a substance] but it does not give a 100% result,” said Khunying Porntip.

“The device has been widely used in the deep South to help narrow down areas where bombs might be planted.”

She was speaking at a seminar yesterday on the reliability of GT 200.

Khunying Porntip, however, insisted the GT 200 has high sensitivity for detecting substances from far away, and the CIFS had never come across any instances of incorrect readings.

also

Meanwhile, Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, director of the Forensic Science Institute and who always uses the GT200, said the UK had only banned the ADE651.

She said the detector was effective when searching for bombs and even nails under water.

I hope that Dr. Pornthip received a lot of money for her support of a proven completely useless product from the military establishment who were frantically trying to save their own a**es as this whole mess blew up. I actually feel sort of sorry for her, as it is her face that is imprinted upon this fiasco while the Thai generals remain in essence incognito....

First you suggested that k. Abhisit tried but didn't succeed further purchase, following you wonder if you should bend a bit more and now somewhat pressed for a better reply you say "if he managed to stop the purchase of more detectors fine", to only continue with if only "he had the cojones to ban it's use outright". How about the current Minister of Defence, selected by PM Yingluck herself, on very important qualities like reliability. The MoD likes to use the devices. Doesn't this cabinet like to improve on the obvious inferior quality of the previous government and cabinet?

PS as I mentioned, to be truthfull is fine; and yes saying the Dutch language is gutteral is no problem at all smile.png

Thai opposition to military : Reconsider purchase of GT200 devices

By Bangkok Pundit Jan 29, 2010 3:30PM UTC

A few days ago, Matichon quoted Somchai Petpraset, a Puea Thai MP and Chairman of the House Committee on the Armed Forces, as stating in reference to the GT200 and Alpha 6 device that the authorities are using to detect bombs and drugs that the the Committee has invited experts to testify.

In addition, he stated that he raised suspicions 3 months ago that the bomb detector devices are unlikely to work . In terms of effectiveness, he stated that it only works 2 out of 10 times and this is very low. He further stated that such devices are inappropriate for use for those doing dangerous work . He said devices were also overpriced and that foreign countries that had used to the devices have ceased to use them and now only developing countries use them. He suspects they were purchased so senior military officers could get a large commission.

According to NNT News, they are investigating the procurement side....

Defense Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat has said the GT200 has so far been effective, resulting in many explosive materials found.

The Department Of Special Investigation has already asked the National Anti-Corruption Commission to conduct preliminary examination to establish the guilt in the procurement of GT200 and ALFA 6 by 13 government agencies.

"received a lot of money"?

Are you implying that she is corrupted?

No way. She is yellow-shirt PAD.

Unlike the Red-shirt, I have never met a corrupted PAD; not Kasit, not Mark, and definitely not Sondhi.

??? If you polled a thousand TV members who are somewhat familiar with this case, I doubt one in that thousand would know who Defence Minister Air Chief Marshall Sukumpol Suwanatat was without ready access to Google. The reality is that it was Dr. Porntip they used as the public face on this debacle due to the trust of the Thai people in her.

I personally have no idea what color shirt she wears. She is a smart woman, and came out with strong public support of a device that is a complete hoax. So form your own opinions why this would occur. My personal feeling is that it would take either pressure or money to force you to endorse something that is junk........

Unfortunately that lack of reputation is useful when a government doesn't want your investigations to be taken credibly

BANGKOK, 5 May 2010 (NNT) - The probe result of the bomb attacks at Sala Daeng Intersection cannot yet be concluded despite evidence found at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, according to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

DSI Director-General Tharit Phengdit announced today that the DSI investigative team responsible for the M79 grenade attacks at Sala Daeng Intersection on 22 April had not formed a final conclusion on which venue in the area was used for the attack, citing that only technical speculations had been made.

Mr Tharit’s comment came after the DSI investigative team, led by Director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, had detected traces of nitrate, a compound of the M79 grenade, in the women's restroom on the eighth floor of King Bhumibol Building of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Upon the discovery, Khunying Pornthip indicated that the grenades might have been launched from the location towards the crowd of multi-color protestors gathering at the nearby Sala Daeng Junction on Silom Road.

Mr Tharit insisted that the DSI would continue probing the case and gathering evidence acquired from the investigative team and related sources before finalizing the probe result.

http://thainews.prd....id=255305050055

I'm not sure if she was using the GT200 bomb detector to find the nitrate but could almost guarantee that was mentioned.

Of course, to this day the Red Shirts are blamed for this attack despite the hospital being under army guard at the time and evidence given by the Bangkok Governor that the grenade was fired from the hospital...................

Down, Fido! Just thought it amusing on yet another picture thread of yours that you had to point out ('scuse the pun) the number of digits Thaksin was holding up, like some remedial class. Obviously not your humour. Perhaps you're more inclined to Abbot and Costello like your link states - what was that all about??

Yeez man, the way you dodge balls there must be a sport which could benefit from your experience. Only going straight seems a problem.

You wrote earlier a suggestion then PM Abhisit tried to stop further purchases but didn't manage to. Still no prove that since that 'stop' more devices have been purchased.

Now you confuse 'this cabinet' with 'a Pheu Thai MP'. You also suggest that a warning in January 2010, tests in February immediately followed by a stop on purchases on the 16th of February 2010 is a wee bit slow response for a government.

2010-02-18

"The government will investigate the procurement of GT200 "bomb detectors" and ask the British manufacturers to take responsibility for providing such false technology, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajivasaid yesterday"

http://www.nationmul...cs_30122877.php

'No balls' Abhisit not daring to confront the military? Another nice wikileak cable from 2010-02-24, first sentence of first two points, follow link for all. Also interesting the note in there "the first Thai purchases of the GT200 occurred by the Thai Air Force in 2004, when Thaksin Shinawatra was PM"

"1. (SBU) Summary: Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva ordered a

halt to RTG procurement of the GT200 explosive detection

device on February 16, after tests conducted by the Ministry

of Science and Technology determined the device was

ineffective.

2. © Comment: Abhisit\’s willingness to confront the

military — to which many commentators assume he is beholden

– on a procurement issue with operational implications, two

areas traditionally seen as military prerogatives, serves as

the latest indication of his growing confidence as Prime

Minister."

http://thaicables.wo...ts-procurement/

PS far be it from me to even remark that Thaksin's brother Gen Chayasit was Army Chief till moving to the Supreme Command in 2004 and replaced in 2005 wink.png

The same bogus bomb scaneer from which both the general who calls himself Minister of defense and Prayuth say they work and the same bomb scanners approved by the Abhisit government.

The first purchases of the GT200 detector occurred in 2004, when Thaksin Shinawatra was PM.

I tell you what though, when he gets out, he would make a hell of a salesman. Probably turn his hand to boiler rooms or something.

I'm sure there'll be a nice home waiting for him here in the LOS (Land of Scams) when he finally is a free man again.

Personally, I wouldn't send him to jail. I'd assign him to a bomb detection squad in the South, arm him with one of his devices, and let him go about "detecting."

Just like the 10 or so bomb disposal units guys who were killed the other day when the bomb they had brought back to their unit exploded in their faces as they tinkered with it.

"Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat vouched for the GT200, saying he was convinced the instrument could sense explosives.

"Don't say that it doesn't work. It actually works. It could be used to find bombs many times. Just one success in detecting bombs and it's worth the price. I can confirm that the GT200 is effective," he said."

So :

If you take me to, say, Yala and I point my finger at innumerable objects and one is found to be a bomb that makes me and my finger an effective Bomb Detection device?

Look up the Laws of Probability Mr. "Defence Minister" and then throw these useless, dangerous pieces of junk away - then prosecute those involved in their procurement ...... not only for corruption but causing death and destruction through their veniality.

Patrick

Makes you feel safe knowing he's in charge of defence doesn't it. I wonder if he'll be moved from that post since he's clearly not up to it or am I looking at the wrong criteria?
