I've always been an avid reader, usually accessing the public libraries when I lived in Oz. In Thailand I read what I can borrow from friends and buy the odd book from a mall shop, but expensive. A friend leant me a book by Dean Koontz called "Frankenstein-Prodigal Son" which I really enjoyed (pulp fiction I know), but I found out after I finished it was Book 1 of a five part series. I managed to download the whole series free as Audio books but it doesn't seem the same having someone read it to you as reading it yourself. Anyone else experience the same thing?

I have never listened to an adio book while i read quite a lot of books mostly fiction. I cant imagine its any good. I read most of my books on my IPAD (hear the kindle is better) I love it more as normal books as you can carry loads of books. I also read fiscal books too keep updated those would be crazy to do on audio books.

I think audio books are primarily for blind people (i could be wrong)

Audio books can be used by people that have reading problems or want to listen to it in the car when driving. Some people just can't concentrate either.

Perhaps you are right, just don't think its the same. When you read you build an image in your head.. you sometimes skip lines ect. Its a different experience i think. I often read a good book in a day or so. (depending on my time i read more on my holidays)

Where have you (guys) been? welcomeani.gif Listening to mp3 audio books(stories) is the way to go!

There are books for every genre, abridged or unabridged, and you can listen to them while performing other chores. I get my downloads from audible[dot]com. Depending on your personal preferences, imagine laying back and relaxing while listening to the professional readers read exciting stories.

Or you can listen all day if you are engrossed in a particular story. Or while shopping, driving, riding a bicycle.....while doing anything.

Instead of judging by conceptions, try listening to a couple/few of your favorite reads on audio. The stories have critiques by other listeners for all to read. Hope you can enjoy!

I love my Kindle and read every night before I go to sleep. I used to read paperback books in bed but my old eyes now need help to read a book. Using reading glasses and turning pages is not that relaxing. I can make the Kindle text as big as necessary to be able to read without reading glasses. I turn pages with a push of my thumb.

I also belong to the Audible book club. It's not cheap at $22.95 a month. I get my choice of two audio books a month. I listen to my books while driving. It really helps pass the time and prevents becoming super bored. The KIndle and my MP3 player serve different needs and I would hate to be without either of them. Often when working in the yard, I have my little MP3 player hanging from around my neck and the ear buds stuck in my ears. It's also great for taking long walks. Some people listen to music but I prefer listening to audio books.

I'm inclined to agree. Having someone read to you puts something between you and the author and you don't seem to exercise your imagination in the same way.

Pure audio gold.....

I have several audiobooks on my MP3 for those long car/taxi rides through BKK.

Just kick back and let someone else do all the work...

Just excellent - thanks for those!

Audio books are my preference these days - very enjoyable, especially when you have a skilled reader. Get yourself a membership with Audible.com (first book is free) and try it out for yourself.

If you can't go to sleep, there's nothing better than an audiobook for helping you out. Seriously if I play one at low volume when I go to bed, I'm out in 10 minutes. You can use the same audiobook repeatedly because the next day you can't remember a thing about what was read. smile.png

When i was in the UK i had to drive a tremendous amount ,getting to see clients ,i loved audio books then ,however i only really like them when i am driving ,and alone.

I tried today, but I just can't get into them. When I read I become totally absorbed, but just listening allows the eyes to wander and I lose concentration.

I don 't mind audio books at all. Sometimes its good to be able to hear the story in the background. Depending on the reader, it can add another dimension to a character.

I found this to be the case with the Elvis Cole detective (robert Crais) series.

I still read paper books at the moment, mainly because i have an unlimited supply for free, but when that changes one day, I will use my tablet device and also download some audio ones.

The only side i see with audio books is that they are often abridged versions of the actual book.

e-books are also providing this abridged service, and multi option storyline service, with a possible passive feedback system that will change the same book in future editions, depending on demand/likeability/feedback etcetera

Probably because your no captive audience, guys are talking about audio books while driving or walking (nothing else to do but listen) But when you are in your home there are so many other things to do and it just does not occupy you enough.

At audible[dot]com the reader generally has a choice of the abridged or unabridged version of each story......also, the Elvis Cole series is but one of the series I follow.

Personally, I definitely like to listen to them while driving around Thailand, not so much in hectic inner-city, rush-hour-like traffic but mainly when driving outside the city and on outings.

I have been an audio drama junkie since one of the nuns got me hooked on Freeway Funnies when I was about 11 years old.

Free stuff

archive.org - Enough old time radio to keep your quiet time filled.

dumb.com/oldtimeradio/ more old time radio

booksshouldbefree.com - volunteers reading various books. Usually these publications are old, but hey, I learned the word "perfidy" from an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. Many of the classics are there Peter Pan, The Sayings of Confucius, Walden, The Adventures of Pinocchio etc.

Stuff to buy

zbs.org These are the people who did The Adventures of Ruby, Dreams of Rio, Moon Over Morocco back in the 70's/80's. They have produced a number of quality productions over the years.

If you have an e-reader and looking for free stuff search here gutenberg.org. The books seem to be in different formats: HTML, EPUB (images/no images), Kindle (images/no images), Plucker, QiOOMobile, Plain Text UTF-8.

Plenty of free stuff to keep just about everyone occupied.
