Possibly due to the upcoming game of musical airports, is the airport's IATA code changing from BKK to BAK? I was searching flights on Air Asia web site and noticed that Suvarnabhumi is listed as BAK now:

Um, what happened to my title? It should be IATA and BAK!

Unfortunately the forum software is normalizing titles to headline styling automatically thus losing the capitalization after the first letter. No solution to this yet.

BKK used to refer to Baku but has been changed. It is possible this has beenreasigned to DMK though I can find no proof..

BKK was the code for Don Muang until Suvarnabhumi started using it since its opening. Now Don Muang uses DMK.

Baku used to be BAK, now changed to GYD.

Thanks I Just saw the thread in the support forum about this and commented on it there. Are you sure it's not something that can be switched off in the admin control panel? I have seen other IP Board forums that don't have this auto-cap feature.

Probably somebody at Air Asia didn't know what to use for Don Meaung?

Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport (SBIA) remains BKK (VTBS), I am certain.

I expect the Don Meaung International Airport to retain the DMK (VTBD) designation.

I am not sure if there will be a overall code to include both BKK and DMK, , a la LON, NYC, PAR which includes certain airports close to a city allowing for more comprehensive searches?

Funnily enough, when I completed my transaction on airasia.com the itinerary shows BKK. Maybe some web developer got ahead of himself in that drop-down list.

BAK is the city code for Baku, no the airport code as there are apparently more than one.

They don't seem to have issued a separate city code for Bangkok so the city and international airport are both BKK despite the existence of DMK.

I inquired with AirAsia about this and no, the airport code is not changing to BAK.

BAK is not an IATA airport code and you will see this on the AirAsia website during the interim period that they have overlapping bookings to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) -- until Sep 30 -- and Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK). I was told that the code DMK will be reflected on the website from Oct 1.

Rest assured, the flight itinerary will reflect the airport that you will fly from / to depending on the date of your departure / arrival.

Hope this helps.

So AirAsia's international flights will also fly out of Don Mueang? or only Domestic Thailand flights?

They, Air Asia et al, have said that all their flights, domestic and international, will depart from and arrive at DMK, hence the need for Immigration services.

Amazingly, some people will actually have an international arrival at DMK on FD and a domestic departure (on say TG, or PG) from BKK!

gf said Don Mueang is an easier airport to get to location wise. Relative to Wong Wien Yai I imagine. BTS doesn't service either one. Never inquired about mini van service say from Victory Monument BTS or other bts station to either airport.

I have made the assumption Air Asia is using BAK in the initial drop down box until 1 October. Any departures/arrivals made prior to 1 October will be BKK, from 1 October it will be DMK.

The airport code will appear correctly once you actually make a booking, prior or post 1 October.

UbonOz is correct.

The 'BAK' code appearing for Bangkok is just a generic temporary moniker being used by Air Asia until after October 1st - it covers both Suvanabhumi (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK).

If your booking date is prior to 1st Oct then your confirmed booking will subsequently show BKK - otherwise it will subsequently show DMK in the confirmed booking for travel Oct 1st onwards.

Makes complete sense while bookings can be made for either of the 2 airports (determined by your travel date)

If the airports list showed both as choices, the masses would inevitably get confused...

...should add that this is in no way connected to IATA airport codes...BAK/Bak is purely an Air Asia thing to cover the period before all of their flights move to Don Muang... other carriers moving there probably have some similar method to cover booking confusion ...

3B. Why do I see 'Bangkok - BAK' when I am booking my tickets on www.airasia.com? How do I know which airport in Bangkok my booking is being made for?

You will see Bangkok (BAK) for selection while making a booking. System will auto-assign Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) based on the date of travel. DMK will apply to all travel starting from 1 October 2012. Your itineraries and boarding passes will show DMK or BKK so please take note of which airport you will be arriving at or departing from.

That's Thai efficiency!

Funnily enough I just booked a Nok Air promotion last night (need to book between 18.00 and 08.00) flying Udon Thani DMK Oct first at 1088THB and a free limo to BKK with plenty of time between both flights, otherwise at 1500+THB + taxi + waist of time it's not worth the trouble and Thai Airways will be the winner for domestic connections at BKK.

Seriously, Swampy's overload is an intentional made problem, all the had to do was to start Phase II last year: build runway 3 and an LCC terminal.

Who believes DMK comes giggle.gif cheaper and handier for passengers?

Yes 'amazingly' the Thailand Tuk Tuk Tribunal just had their fingers pressed in their cheeks (OMG!) when they just happened to found that out.
