If You Wanted To Renounce Citizenship - Which Country Would You Choose?

Featured Replies

Most of us seem to like out homeland even though we've moved away. Some of us have probably already renounced citizenship for another. Many of you probably have multiple passports already.

But, if you were to renounce your citizenship, and you didn't have a second one already, which countries would you consider and why?

Canada if it were not so cold. Because it is almost exactly like America - but colder. tongue.png

To me there are two questions.

First -- the ideal choice assuming they would have you!

Second -- the realistic choice of the countries where you have a chance to get their citizenship

So for me the ideal choice is Canada. I am not qualified for citizenship there. I think if I was born Canadian I wouldn't be an expat anywhere. Vancouver isn't so cold.

The realistic choice of the very few countries I could hope to gain citizenship would be Ecuador

I could also be Israeli and wish it was better there but that's too stressful a choice

I totally agree. Yes......why? Although I would like to tweak it a tad and just be English. What have the Scots and Welsh ever done for us tongue.png Notice how I didn't mention the Irish. That's cos I have Irish Citizenship as well tongue.png

I am now 75 and have worked in most areas of the world.

Being British has been an advantage in many countries, a drawback in others. Having worked mostly for German, French and Swedish companies, I would happily have transferred citizenship to any of those (but the French would have to agree to understand the English language). Also, having had Spanish and Polish wives, I would accept to transfer my allegience to either of those.

However, as senility advances and I begin to lose my faculty of reason, the only option for the future would seem to be Australia.

I'd thought about Australia but I don't think I could stand those bloody corks.

So don't go to nudist beaches.

I was thinking of another safety precaution.

To be fair, most of the cheap ones! biggrin.png

Its interesting to note some are choosing on the basis of financial security rather than experiencing another culture in its entirety.

I reckon I'd like to be Brazilian.....I could do carnival every year and the music is incredible...not to mention the vast country to explore. Yeah....Brasilia....smile.png
