PHUKET: -- Phuket Police have had more than their fair share of tourist crimes this year and, along with dealing with genuine crimes, which they seem to have solved quickly on a regular basis, they have also had to deal with those that appear genuine, but are, in fact liars. Fortunately they have some of the best support in Thailand.. the All Seeing Eye.

The All seeing Eye, (CCTV to you and me) was responsible for helping to solve the genuine murder case of an Australain lady earlier in the summer, it also served its masters by proving that Australian tourist Stevie Bamford was lying when she cried rape.

This week the All seeing eyes of Phuket spied on another liar in a standard tourist scam, when a Malaysian tourist claimed he had been robbed at knifepoint in a Shopping Mall.

The 34 year old is reported to have claimed that he was relieved of his phone, IPAD and wallet, with a total value in excess of 200,000 baht during a visit to the rest rooms in the Resort’s Mall.

His story, of course, was all very convincing and succeeded in worrying police enough to send a team out to the mall to check out security and also the CCTV recordings. [more...]

Good lord - it would be nice if the trend of "more surveillance, all of the time" were to fade away. Unfortunately, it is doubtful that this is going to happen. It would also be great if Thailand simply put its foot down and refused to go down this path - but that seems rather doubtful as well.

You have to laugh.

An article about the TOURIST attempting a scam!! (Insurance you presume)

Yet everyday, tourists are scammed in a creative variety of ways.

what a joke. too bad they can't turn their wondrous cameras on the hundreds of scumsuckers plying their trade on the beaches. i guess the cameras don't work on thai criminals.

Guess the All Seeing Eye does not reach down to the water line to catch those Jet Ski scum.

I wonder why a Pattaya news source is scooping Phuket news.

you wonder why they don't put cctv where al the jetski scammers are doing business

I wonder why a Pattaya news source is scooping Phuket news.

Slow day at Patts? thumbsup.gif

I watched that Australian tv documentary on the Bamford case and anyone who believes she was lying has had no other dealings with what passes for the law enforcers here than having to stump up a 'traffic ticket'. I don't care what the weight of Phuket's PR says.

Yet everyday, tourists are scammed in a creative variety of ways.

No, no.. you didn't read the article. The everyday scams "they seem to have solved quickly on a regular basis" =D

What a rubbish report. Tourists are regularly scammed here. Is this from the nation
