Magic Jack Plus Calling Usa From My Country Home- Minimum Requirements

I just ordered my two MJ Plus, and once I hook it up to my home phone line, I plan to Fed Ex the other MJ Plus to my Retirement home. I live in a small Community in Issan, What they have told me from MJ is I need minimum 128kbs for it to work. My choices are TOT, 3BB, what have you been successful with, as Vonage, is very costly, I my objective is to call my clients from Thailand and have it display my local home number.

What plan and monthly cost does it require, as I am soon to install my internet connect and wireless router, so my IPAD and Iphones and computers will allow me to stay in contact with my associates and watch YouTube.

Your comments are most appreciated, as I plan to do the upgrade in the coming week.

What ever you do DON"T have it mailed to you VIA DHL or FEDEX. Just have it sent via the U.S.P.S then you won't have all the grief and charges from the shippers and Thai customs

Why do you need 2 MJ ? I have my MJ here in Thailand with a California phone number . With it I can call anywhere in the U.S. and Canada for free and any call made to to my Californial MJ number rings here at my home in Thailand (818-453-5062)

I believe this firm still carry's them in Bangkok.

The only issue with MJ that affects me is if I have MJ, Skype and say Joinme, Gotomeeting etc for meetings running all at the same time, otherwise a must have for anyone from the US/Canada btw for Canadians you can get a Canadian number for a small add on. I also connected a corded phone vs a wireless phone on someones suggesting.

2 MJ's make sense if you are calling within Thailand, calls to other users are free no matter where they physically are as long as they are registered with either a US or CDN number.

Whichever ISP you use, do the speed test to make sure it meets the ip phone minimum requirements. You may have the router tweaked to ensure you are getting the max as advertised by the ISP.

I use a NetTalk Duo (NTD) which is similar to the MJ product on a standard 3BB 6 mb download connection. Your upload speed is usually the more important factor. I use a wired connection from my router to the NTD and then a wireless phone. It works great most of the time, but sometimes there is a significant delay and I will ask to call back immediately which usually resolves the problem.

I have also found it better to close my other WiFi devices while using the ip phone as I have multiple laptops, an iPad and wife has her phone and tab devices using the WiFi connections too.

Otherwise, I am very happy with this ip phone vs. using Skype on my cellphone or laptops. The ip phone uses a regular wireless phone, rings like a regular phone and takes messages using the wireless phone hardware. Maybe I am just too old school, but this is comfortable for me and much better sound than using the cellphone service or Skype on either the cellphone or laptop.

The annual fee of $20 provides 3000 minutes a month (MJ is different) to anywhere in the USA. I have kids and ex-wife in three time zones so it's been terrific to where I will cancel my USA cellphone when the contract expires.

Yea, don't use FedEx or DHL as that raises the possibility of a high customs charges; just use USPS to lower that possibility. And any Thai ISP should work with the MJ+...the 128Kb is needed in each direction....upstream/outbound audio (i.e., you talking) and also needed for downstream/inbound audio (i.e.,the person on the other end talking). Since most Thai ISP plans start around 6Mb/512Kb nowdays any plan should work. Latency/ping time is important with VOIP devices...ping time between the U.S. and Thailand runs in the 200-300ms ballpark and as long as your ISP ping time is not higher because they use crapp DNS routing which makes the ping time higher and cause connection/audio problems the MJ should work fine with most any ISP. Over the years here in Bangkok I've used several VOIP type services and currently a NetTalkDuo device on TOT ADSL (4Mb/512Kb and 6Mb/512Kb) and True DOCSIS/cable (20Mb/2Mb) with no problems cause by the ISP...I had a few brief problems when still on a certain VOIP service but that was a problem with their servers back in the U.S. that they fixed. So far, my NetTalkDuo device/NetTalk service has worked great.

I use a NetTalkDuo like losgrad and it works great...clear inbound and outbound calls to the U.S...bought it off Ebay for around $45 which included the first 12 months of calling service.. You can buy brand new from NetTalk for $49.95 which includes the first 12 months of calling service. It provides 3000 minutes per month before NetTalkDuo may consider the use commercial...yearly renewal is $29.95 per year plus tax....you can get a slightly lower yearly rate if subscribing for longer than 1 year. Link

Nettalk also provides live, human being tech support which I've never had to use but I did call a few times just to see if a human answered and they did; MJ only provides online support. Both have smartphone Apps with the MJ App now linking their App with the MJ device/account which allows inbound and outbound calls to the App. The Nettalk App only allow limited outbound calls right now, but should soon release an App upgrade linking their App to the NTD/NetTalk account. Click this Link and it will take you to another ThaiVisa thread which has discussed the MJ+ and NetTalkDuo quite a bit...maybe you have already viewed the thread. Cheers.

With the App you can make free outbound calls, but you can't receive calls unless you have a MagicJack account/device/number to link to the App....and the MagicJack account/number does cost X-amount per year.
