Advice Needed On O-A Visa Renewal/extension

Featured Replies

Hi all. My parents and me including, are at a loss of what to do as this will be their first O-A visa renewal/extension they have to go through.

They were both issued with a Multiple Entry O-A visa in our home country with an issue date of 22 Nov 2011, and they entered Thailand on 26 Nov 2011. They went for the 90 days reporting for the first time at Chaeng Wattana. Subsequently, they always left before the next 90 days reached and returned to Thailand for 2 months or so and did the same for the next couple of times.

One question will be that they are always stamped in with a date valid for another year. The latest stamp (entered Thailand on 19 Sept 2012) shows until 18 Sept 2013. Does this mean that they will be entitled to stay till then?

Or, if they are not entitled to actually stay till then, when can they proceed to renew or extend their current O-A visa? Will it be 30 days before 26 Nov 2011 which is their first activation of the O-A visa?

Can an O-A visa actually be renewed or extended? And will it be for another year?

I understand that they will need to produce their Thai bank statements which shows 800,000 baht or more for each person and in their banks for at least 3 months. Can these bank statements be easily obtained from the branch at Chaeng Wattana on the the day itself of their intended renewal? Or must they obtain it now? My parents are worried that if they are going to apply it now, there will be movements in their bank accounts.

Pardon me for my ignorance and countless questions. We just wish to find out what next to do and make this process as smooth as possible.

Thanks in advance for your much appreciated help and advice.

Every entry up until 22nd November 2012 will get a stay of 12 months.

So yes they can stay until 18th Sept 2013.

If they do a border run just before 22nd November will get another 12 months.

After 22nd November if they intend on leaving the country they need to get a Re Entry Permit from Immigration.

This will keep their current stay alive.

1,000 Baht for a single and 3,800 Baht for a Multi Entry.

This way they will not have to worry about extending until well into next year.

When it comes to it only one of them has to have 800,000 Baht in the bank.

They will have to apply for an 1 year extension of stay during the last 30 days of the current permit to stay of 18 Sept 2013.

If they leave and return before Nov. 22 of this year they will get another one year permit to stay stamp and then do the extension within the last 30 days that entry.

After Nov.22 they will need to go to immigration and apply for a re-entry permit if they leave the country or they would loose their current permit to stay.

They will need to have the money in the bank for 60 days prior to their application for an extension.

And yes they are currently allowed to stay until 18 Sep 2013 but for any travel with a return date after Nov expiration date of there visa they must obtain a re-entry permit first to keep there last allowed stay for return. If no more travel planned before expiration that date will remain 18 Sep 2013. During the 30 days prior to that date they should visit immigration with financials for one year extension of stay.

Your multiple entry O-A visa issued on 22 Nov 2011 is valid for entry to Thailand until 21 Nov 2012. Each time that you enter you will get 1 year permission to stay. Your current entry on 19 Sept 2012 is valid until 18 Sept 2013. You can leave and reenter Thailand again, but must reenter before the O-A visa expires on 21 Nov 2012. If you do you will get another full year permission to stay - 1 year from the date that you enter.

However, your ability to exit and reenter at will terminate when the visa expires. You must purchase a re-entry permit to be able to exit and re-enter to keep the validity of your current permission to stay. Re-entry permits are available at immigration - cost single 1000 baht, multiple 3800 baht. During the last 30 days of your permission to stay (currently 18 Sept 2013) you can apply for a 1 year extension at a cost of 1900 baht. Medical and criminal background checks are not required, but you must have either 800k baht in a Thai bank in your name only seasoned for 2 months or at least 65000 baht/month income from overseas. At the same time that you extend you also should purchase a reentry permit if you intend to leave and reenter Thailand. If you are in Thailnad for 90 consecutive days you must report your address to immigration.

Thanks for the answers. It has helped us understand about the O-A visa even more.

Just to be sure, am I right to say that the issue for us is actually not about renewing/extending their current O-A visa(as they don't need to), but to actually just get a multiple re-entry permit?

And if they re-enter Thailand before 21 Nov 2012 and gets a valid stay till 20 Nov 2013, only then(30 days before 20 Nov 2013) they should go and apply for an extension of stay?

Yes to both your comments. The re-entry permits will be needed if they travel and will have an entry after 21 Nov. of this year.
