Crime Two Cambodians Arrested in Cross-Border Cigarette Smuggling Bust

Authorities have dismantled a significant transnational cigarette smuggling operation, arresting two Cambodian nationals and seizing over 50,000 packs of untaxed cigarettes valued at more than 3 million baht in unpaid taxes. The estimated fines for the offenders could exceed 42 million baht.   The suspects, identified as Ms. Chiva Chuoy and Mr. Nak Khoeun, both 35 years old, were apprehended at a commercial building in Bueng Cham O subdistrict, Nong Suea district, Pathum Thani province. The operation was a joint effort between the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) and the Excise Department. The investigation began after authorities intercepted smaller quantities of illicit cigarettes in Bangkok and Samut Prakan. These seizures led investigators to a larger network operating in eastern Thailand, with links to Cambodian suppliers. The smuggled cigarettes were brought into Thailand through natural border crossings in Sa Kaeo province and concealed within fruit delivery trucks.  Undercover officers, posing as bulk buyers, arranged a sting operation at the suspects’ warehouse. Upon arrival, Ms. Chuoy and Mr. Khoeun attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended. A subsequent search of the premises revealed 102 boxes of various cigarette brands, including counterfeit Thai brands such as Krong Thip. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to operating the smuggling ring for approximately two years. Mr. Khoeun managed customer relations through online platforms, while Ms. Chuoy coordinated orders with relatives in Cambodia. They admitted to earning a profit of 20–50 baht per carton.  The Excise Department estimates that the seized contraband represents over 3 million baht in unpaid taxes, with potential fines under the Excise Act reaching approximately 42 million baht. Tensions Flare as India Launches Military Strike on Pakistan Following Kashmir Attack In a dramatic escalation of regional hostilities, India confirmed early Wednesday that it had carried out a military strike against Pakistan, targeting what it described as "terrorist infrastructure" in both Pakistan and the disputed region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The move comes in response to a deadly massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir that has reignited long-standing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. U.S. President Donald Trump reacted swiftly to the news, calling the development “a shame” during remarks following a ceremony in the Oval Office on Tuesday evening. “It’s a shame. We just heard about it, just as we were walking in the doors of the Oval, just heard about it. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past, they’ve been fighting for a long time, you know, they’ve been fighting for many, many decades and centuries,” Trump said. He expressed hope that the situation would not spiral further, adding, “I just hope it ends very quickly.” The U.S. State Department echoed concerns, noting that the situation remains fluid and serious. A spokesperson stated, “We are aware of the reports, however we have no assessment to offer at this time. This remains an evolving situation, and we are closely monitoring developments.” In the days leading up to the Indian military strike, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been in contact with senior officials in both India and Pakistan, urging restraint. According to State Department readouts from April 30, Rubio pressed both sides to “de-escalate tensions” and avoid further violence following the attack in Kashmir. Pakistan, however, swiftly condemned the Indian military action. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif accused India of targeting civilians during its operation. Speaking to Geo News, Asif claimed, “Civilians were killed, including women and children.” He rejected India’s explanation that it had targeted terrorist camps, stating, “India is claiming it attacked terrorist camps; this is not true, international media can visit the places civilians were targeted.” In contrast, India’s military has remained defiant and unapologetic. The Indian Army issued a terse and assertive statement on Wednesday, declaring, “Justice is Served.” The message was signed off with “Jai Hind!”—a patriotic slogan meaning “Victory to India.” The latest developments have plunged India and Pakistan into one of their most tense confrontations in recent years. The deeply rooted conflict over Kashmir, a region claimed by both nations but administered in parts, continues to be a flashpoint for violence and geopolitical strain. As international leaders call for calm, the region watches anxiously to see whether diplomacy or further escalation will shape the next chapter in this volatile standoff. Tesla sales plunge across Europe
Was just in the US for a bit. The only rentals they had were electric. Thankfully I got a Tesla. Met a lady at the rental place that was returning her non-tesla EV. She had horror stories of not being able to find chargers that would work for the car she had and having to drive 30-40 miles to get to one. Tesla chargers were everywhere. And none of them were on fire. The Tesla I rented had about 40k miles. The interior was deteriorating. Build quality was poor. I'd never buy one.
