Does anyone know how you get those license plates with the Lam Prom Thep background? My Thai friends say they are only available by auction but that does not seem right as I see so many of them.

Yes, that's correct, they are only offered up by auction by the Vehicle Licence Office. Every 1 or 2 years. Last Auction was earlier this year. I have noticed ads in the Phuket Gazette offering by private sale, these plates are legally transferable. I have a couple myself, but not for sale.

There used to be a shop on Sai Nam Yen road in Patong that would paint your existing plates - moved in the last few months to who knows where. Pity as I was just about to get mine done. Not sure of the legalities but many get them done this way.}

Is the auction thing not only for the special lucky numbers?

Never really was interested in one, but I would think, you can transfer every one to a picture background.

But maybe they sell all, also with 'normal' numbers, for a high price on auctions, only.
