Driving A Thai Registered Car Into Myanmar ( Burma) ?

Featured Replies

I wish to drive my thai registered jeep into Myanmar, I already have the passport for the jeep.

As I understand it you can drive into Myanmar via Mae Sai over the friendship bridge, obtain a visa for the jeep and myself at this point and then drive the 160 kilometers as far as Kentung 100 kilometers from the Chinese border.

Any information would be gratefully received.

OP, the information you have is correct. You may be allowed to drive almost up to the Chinese border, but won't be allowed to cross over to China from there, whether you drive your car or not. You must return the same way you came. Not sure if the guide requirement is still in force, but if yes, you would also be required to have a guide sit in your car with you during your stay in Myanmar, when driving outside of Tachileik. There is a fee payable for crossing the border and both the Thai and Myanmar sides will ask you for some sort of fee. The amounts asked are minimal though. Myanmar insurance may also be required and can be purchased near the border.

The only other border where you may be permitted to cross in a car would be Mae Sod, but then only during the day and you would not be allowed to leave the town limits. Payathonzu (opposite Three Pagodas Pass) may also work, but the same rules would apply. Given that you are restricted to a 5km radius, there wouldn't be a point in bringing a car across the border at any of these two crossings and very few Thai cars enter, probably only a dozen vehicles a day or less at both crossings.
