Could this also be a Hawkmoth caterpillar..? It must be a hell of a size of moth, or butterfly. It was about 4 inches long. And it wasn't in my garden.

Yes, I would say so. I had an actual moth on another cactus plant years ago and took lots of pictures. They are spectacular. But the caterpillars are real hungry b@stards
