Makkawan police block reinforced with two companies of riot police

BANGKOK: -- A police source said two companies of riot police stationed in the Government House were deployed to reinforce the police lines at the Makkawan Rangsan Bridge.

The reinforcement was made after protesters tried to break through the police lines to link the area to the Royal Plaza.

The source said police kept protesters from the road from Makkawan bridge to Misakawan Intersection at the order of Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung who fear that the protesters may storm into the Government House.

Three companies of border patrol police moved from Parliament to Makkawan bridge

BANGKOK: -- Three companies of border patrol police stationed inside Parliament were moved to reinforce the police lines of defence at the Makkawan Rangsan Bridge.

Only Parliament-beat police remain to guard the compound.

Phra Photirak injured by teargas

BANGKOK: -- Phra Photirak, the Santi Asoke Buddhist sect leader, was among those injured when police fired teargases at about 2 pm.

Phra Photirak was rushed to be treated behind the rally stage at the Royal Plaza. His eyes turned red and his robe had the strong stench of teargas, causing those who treated him to have watery eyes.

Boonlert overheard calling senior Army officers

BANGKOK: -- After protesters were attacked with teargases at 2 pm, Pitak Siam leader Gen Boonlert Kaewprasit was overheard calling senior Army officers, asking them to do something to protect the demonstrators.

When sound of teargas firing was heard at 2 pm, Boonlert walked to the area in front of the First Army Area to find out what happened. He made a phone call to First Army Area Commander Lt Gen Paibul Khumchaya. "Will you allow them to do this to me?" he was heard speaking over the phone.

He also called Deputy Army chief Gen Dapong Ratanasuwan and was heard telling Dapong to protect the people.

Police estimate number of protesters at 18,000 to 20,000

BANGKOK: -- Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayo told a press conference at 2 pm that police estimated the number of protesters at about 18,000 to 20,000.

Piya said the Royal Plaza ground was still able to accommodate the current number of protesters.

He said if the number of demonstrators grows, police would allow the rally organisers to expand the rally ground.

The spokesman said police did not intend to block protesters from rallying but simply prevented them from entering restricted areas.
