PHUKET: -- Police suspect unbranded drugs may have contributed to the death of a British tourist whose body was discovered in his resort guest room this morning in Phuket.

The man, a 64-year-old British national, was found dead by his female companion in the couple’s room at a resort at Nai Thon Beach at about 9am, said Capt Prakorp Boonkwan of the Tah Chat Chai Police.

“At the scene, we found several unidentified medicines in the room. We have sent these for testing to determine precisely what the drugs are,” Capt Prakorp said.

The man’s body was found lying on the bed and there were no signs of a struggle in the room, he added.

“The body will be sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police General Hospital in Bangkok in order to determine the cause of death,” explained Capt Prakorp.

The British man checked in at the resort about three days ago and was joined by an Indonesian woman yesterday.

“They went to have dinner near the beach. Then in the morning, the woman reported to resort staff that the man had died,” said Capt Prakorp.

“We will continue our investigation, but we will have to wait for the test results before we can confirm the cause of death,” he added.

The Gazette has been informed of the man’s name, but it is being withheld pending confirmation that next of kin abroad have been notified.

Very sad indeed. I just read this report:

A United Nations report lists phony medicines as the "greatest concern" when it comes to counterfeit goods. This is because not only can they result in the deaths of people using them, but medicines with insufficient doses can lead dangerous pathogens to become resistant to even the legitimate drugs.

"You have tests of anti-malarials in Africa and Southeast Asia that show very high shares - in some cases more than half - of the drugs in circulation are ineffective," said Ted Leggett, a researcher at the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime. Many of those drugs were shown to have insufficient levels of medicine, said Leggett.

I have to slightly disagree with you on this one, here in Ban Phe, Rayong there are some excellent pharmacies with knowledgable staff and some are even attached to doctors surgeries and I have found the staff to be quite careful about what they sell. Also, the Tesco superstore in Rayong has a pharmacy in store where again the staff are very good.

RIP... but for all we know, the "unidentified" pills were nothing more than aspirin. It's too much conjecture to talk about them being related or not related to the death. They really should say nothing more than the investigation is ongoing. If I died overnight, the police would find all sorts of unidentified medicines in my toiletry bag. There's IBuprofen, aspirin, an old Zip pack of antibiotics, some imodium, antihistamines, etc.--all unidentified and mostly out of date. It just seems crazy to jump to conclusions like this.

Talk to the woman--she was there. He is in the room for two days just fine, then she shows up and the next morning he is dead. Coincidence? Who is she? Is this a pattern with her? Where does she live? Are they her pills? Could she have slipped him something at dinner? Did they check her bags? How much money did she have on her? Does the amount of money make sense? Is it in British Pounds? Etc., etc. The investigation is ongoing (or should be!).

Wow, I am surprised, I have probably been to two or three Pharmacies in the last 32 years here that I would consider to have anything remotely close to "knowledgeable staff".

Generally they just seem to be a cheap alternative to going to the doctor's, although in many cases both seem to do the same poor job, ie treat the symptoms and not the disease.
