Just for the record I am an unmarried father of a Thai Child and left the country earlier in the year for the first time with my daughter alone (mother not present). I had the orginal birth certificate and a letter of consent from the mother but did not have to produce either. The immigration officer did ask my daughter if I was her Daddy but that was the extent of the checks.

As Mario has suggested I think if your child carries your surname then the chances of not being able to take your child out of the country are minimal.

I shall be leaving alone with my daughter in January, this time probably without the letter of consent, due to the fact that my partner is currently being held without charge in a Thai prison. I am however not too concerned about the letter due to my previous experience with immigration.
