Theft Deterrent Options

Featured Replies

I just took delivery of a new Vigo 4x4, which - at least so far - I am content with. However, seeing how this model is probably the most frequent theft target in the area, I would like to get some info about theft deterrent devices that are available in Thailand. There are several other topics on this subject, but they seem to have strayed off-topic a lot and don't really have much useful info. Does anybody have any good information on what types of systems might be the most troublesome for thieves to bypass?

On my V-Cross the dealer fitted a device that stops the brake pedal being applied and also disables the engine start until the device is unlocked. No idea how easy it is to get master keys to the locks or break the locks ... the device looks pretty strong though. If you want a pic just ask.

At night a guy across the street parks with a wheel clamp on his truck.. I could also take a picture if you want.

Thanks for the pics, JAS21. I was going to ask you as well, but eezergood beat me to it. This appears like it might be a pretty good product. A quick google search from the labelling ("locktech") pulls up www.visitlock.com, which appears to be the correct product site (as far as I can tell).

Does it ever get in the way? Like hitting your knees or feet?

Also (if you have any knowledge of this), being so simple to install, seems like you could un-install it just as easy. Is there any security measure that would deter somebody from just unscrewing the mounting bolts?

Thanks a bunch for posting useful info. If anyone has anything to contribute, please keep this thread going!

I have the same make on my Fortuner and is doesn't get in the way and once fitted and locked it can't be un bolted. super thing very strong.

I have a similar one that came as a freebie with my Toyota Pickup.

Seems pretty solid. Only thing it's a bit difficult to unlock once you are in the car so have to always remember before getting in whistling.gif

As an extra deterrent I want to fit a cut out switch to stop the engine from starting. On my last diesel motor, a lifetime ago back in Farang land I put a switch in the wire to the fuel solenoidd, but with this new computerized fangled motor I haven't figured how to do it yet sad.png

No not easy to uninstall as the tightning nuts come off ... it's probably a grind off job ... see the diagram and also the pictures ... it's nowhere near your knees.

You may also want to consider something to stop the buggers stealing your spare wheel aswell, I fitted a 'Locktech' wheel lock recently after several people I know have had theirs stolen. Might just be enough to make the thieves to move on.

I've been offered a similar device, maybe the same, a few years ago at Boy air in Pattaya and at time you would aqdditional get a reduction on your insurance if it was insured by Virya.

I agree, and thanks for the link. After doing some reading here and elsewhere, a spare wheel lock is definitely on the top of my to-do list now.

I have got the locktech installed on my car too, very happy to have it, I think it is really a smart device as it is both mechanical and electronic anti theft device, when you pull and lock the brake, you can't start the engine. The only problem is that the steering wheel is now fixed, and not able to adjust to some angle variations. But after all, I think this is really good.
