The job of enemy combatants is to protect their people and fight the American enemy, they have a right to defend themselves from the American invaders.

Why do you hate other people freedom, Spee ? :o

As much as I disagree with the way Guantanamo is being handled, I'd hardly class the taliban as freedom fighters. :D

You really don't have a clue what you are talking about, Spee! :o

Not all the guys were captured in combat, some were apprehended, abducted and incarcerated in connection with the so-called "war on terrorism" - a figure of speech, not a 'war' in the formal sense, if you haven't noticed.

As pointed out twice to you now, your US government takes a very different view and definition of affairs from yourself.

Accusing me of 'trolling'? :D:D

Talibans had to be eliminated for sure, but they have nothing to do with International terrorism. That's the problem with Guantanamo.

It was a dissident arm of the Talibans with the help of Osama Ben Laden that organized the 911 incident.

2 years before, a delegation of Talibans went to visit Texas and GW Bush, the governor, was all praise to their commitment to God, men of faith, purity of religion etc...

The poor prez is so cluless about everything, what make you think that he knows what's he is doing in Guantanamo :D

They are barking at the wrong tree while the real terrorists are quietly preparing 911 Part Deux and I can tell you it won't be nuclear :D

Spee obviously didn't even get the memo from the WH, this is how low in the chain of command he is :o

Why do you hate other people freedom

You're such a dumb-sh*t B'fly I don't know why I bother to respond. You're the commie leftist who wants to deny people freedom.

For the ump-teenth time, I don't hate other peoples' freedom. However when they abuse that freedom to plan and execute harm against America, Britain and our allies, then nothing less than a bullet is good enough for them. There's only one way to win a war, keep killing people until one side has had enough. I don't think there are enough islamo-wackos in the world to overcome the rest of the civilized world.

The hard-line islamo-wackos don't realize that the world doesn't want Islamo-facist theocracies throughout the middle east and Europe. They simply won't allow it to happen.

The wacko attempts are already lamer and lamer by the day. Four years ago, attack America, 9 months ago, attack London, 6 months ago, burn all the Renaults in France, now, attack the political cartoonists of the world. Every time one of the hardcore wacko's sticks their head up, may there be an allied rifle scope zeroed in on it.

Not all the guys were captured in combat, some were apprehended, abducted and incarcerated in connection with the so-called "war on terrorism" - a figure of speech, not a 'war' in the formal sense, if you haven't noticed.

You make a statement but provide no evidence. How many of the 500 or so baddies in Gitmo aren't there because they weren't involved in planning or executing warfare against America or American allies?

As far as war goes, the only rule is there are no rules. The war on terrorism is a war like any other. If you don't think so, then you are deluding yourself. Islamo-wackos have declared war on America and American allies. America is simply taking their word on face value.

There is a very big reason why Syria and Iran are funding and arming the Iraqi resistance in the north and south respectively. It is because it is the only way to try and keep the allied focus off of them, because they are definitely next unless they get their countries in order. Only thing is, is that it isn't working.

Yet you allow him to play you like a puppet on a string. :o

Getting so wound up over these things is like troll vitamins. He posts something silly knowing it will send you into hysterics, and when you willingly comply he sits back and has a laugh.

Entertaining to the rest of us, yes, but is it worth having a cardiac episode over?

I was thinking along the same lines, especially in the other thread recently started by B'fly:

America: Analysis Of A Facist State

Some people are easier to bait than others. Some people will go into a frenzy if the topic is of personal interest to them and it looks like someone else is being disparaging.

That's right Spee, don't let him wind you up.

Recall when he and Membrane got into it a while back on here and it resulted in mass suspensions for all. It's quite amazing how long B-Fly has lasted this time around! :D

Ahh, you're changing your tune, we're not taking about people being captured in combat and PoWs any more now? :D

Fine, I take it you concede you made a 'mistake' earlier. :D

I don't know the numbers, but the status and kind of prisoners in Gitmo is information easily available. Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay#Statistics

As of June 2005, the United States was holding about 520 foreign terrorism suspects at the facility, some of whom were captured in Afghanistan. On September 22, 2004 ten prisoners were brought from Afghanistan. A total of 242 detainees have been moved out of Guantanamo as of July 20, 2005, according to the U.S. Department of Defense, Of these 242, 173 have been released, and 69 transferred to the governments of other countries.

...

The WSJ reports that of the 505 detainees held in Guantánamo, 100 or more are from Saudi Arabia, about 80 are from Yemen, about 65 are from Pakistan and about 50 are from Afghanistan. Two detainees are from Syria.

For example:

Abdulsalam al-Hela has been held in Guantánamo Bay since September 2004. He was abducted in Egypt during a business trip in 2002 and held in secret detention in Afghanistan. His family said that the Egyptian embassy in Sana’a, Yemen, told them that he had left Egypt on "a special American plane that took him to Baku, Azerbaijan"

MORE colossal Kofi conflicts: "Kofi Annan has learned nothing from the U.N.'s Oil-for-Food scandal, in which Saddam Hussein's billions corrupted the U.N.'s entire Iraq embargo bureaucracy. Earlier this month, Annan accepted from the ruler of Dubai an environmental prize of $500,000--a fat sum that represents the latest in a long series of glaring conflicts of interest. Call this one Cash-for-Kofi."

Note to Condi: Why don't we give this sort of outright bribery a try? It seems to be all the rage. :o

Every time I see something like this, one thing comes to mind:

I'm in the wrong job ! (Either that or I'm far too honest)

Isn't the topic "Eff Kofi", for suggesting to close Gitmo? :o

Some 'environmental prize' makes a weak diversion...no cigar for this one, pal. :D

Come on now. Even you have to realize that will never happen.

For starters, the top position is supposed to come from Asia, and last time I checked, Bolton looked

pretty caucasian to me.

Secondly, the anti-american bloc wouldn't approve of an American candidate anymore than they'd approve an Israeli one.

Like many places, the UN isn't about picking the best qualified person for the job (i.e. Me), it's about appeasing the member nations.

Agree so I guess it's perfectly justified for the Islamists to use any tactics against the invaders, like martyrdom, wouldn't you agree ? if the US feels they are justified to bomb innocent civilians and jail innocents men over false pretense, then it's OK for "Islamists" to respond and use "Terrorism" against the US ? right ? is that really your line of thinking ? what make you different then from the Islamo-facists ? :o

Actually, if the UN had any spine, they should have kicked out the US ever since the UN illegal resolution against Iraq.

US conservatives claim to be fed up with the UN. Great. The whole word is fed up with America self interest so let's kick America out of the UN. Problem solved for everybody and it will be a better world for us all, even for US citizens.

Still waiting on that example there zzap :o

I am still waiting for answers to my questions and suggestions, too.

I am sure you'd be happy to see a US-something heading the UN, others feel you lot have enough influence already.

Do I need to spell out how the only left superpower asserts its dominance?

These guys are no PoWs, do your homework, Spee. :o

PoW = Prisoner of War

These chumps were captured in battle while waging war against the coalition forces.

What other definition would you want to give to them????

Get a clue or quit trolling.

Jesus christ, I cannot belive I'm reading this, and typed by a NeoCon Bush-fan to top it off.

I would agree with you, wholeheartedly, that they are POW.

Sadly, your heroes, the ones in control of the industrial military complex and the foreign politics of the current goverment of US of A - doesn't.

Hence, they are placed where they are.

I cannot believe you typed what you did. =)

anyway, back to the topic.

Koffi is probably the most daring UN secretary we had for a long time. He is an elegant diplomat and when the US raided the UN security council "illegally" with secret service agents to "seize" the Iraq report submitted by Saddam Hussein, he was all trying to play it down to calm down everybody (everyone at the UN security council was very upset, this is a major breakup of diplomatic protocol). It would have been me, I would have packed all the UN staff and moved to Switzerland and banned the US from the UN security council. That was his chance, he didn't do it. He would have got the 2/3 majority of the Assembly easily over that incident and have the US kicked out for good from the UN. Even Britain, with Blair the poddle, wouldn't have followed.

No, you better believe it. This is what he and his like are all about, Nazi wannabee, without the Jewish proganda, but they have the "scapegoat" muslims instead (jews and communists were accused of burning down the Reishtag). And he was being "moderate" here. You should see what he posts when he is all worked up :o

Well, it would have been "Don't let the door hit you in the ass" time as the UN in its present form with its present useless 'leader' are not only totally corrupt but incredibly dangerous. Everything from UN workers in Africa raping & pillaging to the fiasco in Bosina. 'Elegant diplomat'! Didn't realize this was comedy central! :o

My unit had been in Croatia for about 3 months (back in '92/'93) when the UN passed a resolution allowing us to actually return fire if we were fired on !

It came as a surprise to us that for almost 3 months, we weren't supposed to shoot back if the bad guys shot at us !! (Good thing no one actually told us that beforehand)

Around the same time, I saw a cartoon in a newspaper (gasp). It showed this huge tiger with the letters "UN" on it's side, poised to pounce on Serbian leader Milosovich (or however you spell it).

Only problem was, the tiger had no teeth or claws. Typical of the UN, lot's of "roar" but no real teeth or fangs. Even if it had them, it would be reluctant to use them.
