Can I get the 30 day extension on a tourist entry at any time, or does it have to be the day the visa expires?

I assume you mean a 30 day extension of a 60 day tourist visa entry.

You can do it as early as a couple weeks. The extension will be added to your current permit to stay meaning you loose nothing by going early.

    Yep, that's what I meant. My visa expires on the 31st. Do you think I'll be alright going in tomorrow? It's not a hugely popular immigration office and the people are usually friendly.

    Is it you permit to stay or visa that is expiring on the 31st.

    You should be able do the extension of your permit to stay (not the visa) now if you want to.
