Internet On Samui

Featured Replies

Hey guys. I breifly went into this when I started another thread asking about moving to Samui.

I need more information on the internet situation.

I work on the internet so I need some clear answers.

So far I understand that if I move into a place without internet that it may take quite a while to actuall get it installed. So I would rent a place that has internet already because I cant handle downtime like that. What kinds of speeds are we talking about here? In bangkok Im getting 2500 down (theroetical of course :o ). Some people have said the internet is unrealiable. DOes this mean it goes down for an hour a day? Out all day sometimes? Whats the situation like?

Also, anybody use Vonage on samui? Hows the connection?

Thanks again guys.

I use TOT ADSL, get a hiccup every so often (once a week) for an hour or so.Otherwise no real probs.

Oh by the way if you rent close to the existiog connection points or lines ( sorry not very technical person) you get quick connection.Mine took 1 week from application.

100.0Mbps

I don't know about Samui but on Phangan there are only a few ISP's that provide DSL. Also, you have to make sure you live in an area that has DSL. Speeds will vary from how far you are to the main station. Don't know where those are, I think it depends on if you are going with ToT or TT&T. It might be worth it, when you come, to drive around to various internet cafes advertising broadband, check their speeds and find out who 1)their phone company is and 2) who their provider is. That would give you a better idea of "livable" places.

Be aware that DSL isn't available everywhere on the island. Some places go with satellite, check out the internet/communications forum for more information on how good (or bad) that is.

We pay around 1000 baht a month, don't have a great connection because we are quite far from the station. But, hey its better than the dial up I had before so I am happy.

The Adsl on Samui is very slow as it Depends on the distance from your pc to the nearest Adsl router.

The more people conected on the same inferstructure line as you the lower your speed.

The set up is done by TOT and if the area you are in, has no inferstructure it will take a long time to hook up.

I personaly allso depend on the net for my work so i contacted Loxinfo and they set up a direct conection via satelite. the set up cost is about 7000baht including the deposit on the modem and the monthly fee is about 4500baht. its way more expensive but the speed is very high. and the service centre his much more efficiant the TOT

We are getting 150mb. and the weather, even on the rainy days a week ago did not have any effect.

Enlighten us OH WISE ONE.

I think it’s just a typo. Probably meant 100-150kps. A 100megabit internet connection would allow you to download a 10 megabyte file in about 1 second.

The speed you get depends on what internet package you have subscribed to and they normally come as (down/up speeds) 1024Kbit/512Kbit , 512Kbit/256Kbit , 256Kbit/128Kbit.

The speed indicated in the internet connection window is just the speed between your computer and the ADSL modem.

Sorry to disapoint you Rooo..

Not disapointed at all lmao.I understand that part of it.I all I said was the connection speed reads 100Mbps, I never said that was download speed.

Internet is much slower here than in Bangkok. At 1bt a minute it can cost 5bt just to wait for the blue bar to fill up.
