Diabetes - Richard K. Bernstein-Like Doctor In Thailand?

Featured Replies

Dr. Richard K. Bernstein is a US doctor that has successfully treated diabetics with his specific methods.

Is anyone aware of any doctors in Thailand who are familiar with his work and use his methods?

No and I very, very much doubt you'll find any. Docs in Thailand tend to go very light on lifestyle modification/dietary counsellng and heavy on meds, be it hypertension, diabetes or whatever. The medical culture here seems to assume it is a waste of time to advise people to make changes in diet etc. Perhaps in part because owing to the cultural tradition of group sharing of dishes and strong cultural attachment to white rice, it is indeed very hard for Thais to be ion special diets.

However the only part of Bernstein's method which IMO requires physician supervision is adjustments to insulin. If you are a type 2 diabetic, its is all well within what you can do yourself -- diet, exercise and glucose monitoring.

My mother is a type 2 diabetic and at age 81 has been able to completely avoid the need for medications and maintain optimal BS entirely by dietary control and exercise. Not everyone is prepared to do this, and it does mean seriously regimenting your food intake, but for those who are it is often possible.

If you are a type 1 diabetic then you will need to have some physician oversight as regards your insulin. While I don't think you will find a doctor here who specifically promotes./uses Bernstein's approach, they do all understand the effect of diet and if you get an endocrinologist who spent some time in the US they will likely know enough about ity to understand what it is you want to do.

Thank you for your post.

Agree and that's what I'm looking at.
