Dead Baby

Featured Replies

Did anyone see the news at the end of last week? On one channel there was an article about a kid that drowned. When the divers recovered the body the first thing that they did when the came to the surface - still holding the corpse - was look at each other, smile, and give a high-five! All that while there is a dead 5 year old floating face down between them.

Can anyone think of a cultural reason as to why this would be appropriate behaviour?

No, that is bloody disgraceful behaviour :o

US soldiers do it all the time when they shoot down teenagers or women in Iraq. It's not a cultural thing, it's a human thing. Stupidity and cruelty know no frontier.

that recovery of the body of the 5 year old also happened to take the life of one of the rescue divers who drowned. The thing that I found abhorrent was they pulled him out of the water and got him to the shore and no one attempted CPR on him. one of the utility rescue vehicles backed up and he was loaded into it and taken to hospital. so of course he was dead when he arrived.

But this sort of preventable death is propagated by the sad soapies that are shown on thai television - some one "drowns" and they are hauled out of the water and the hero pokes them in the stomach a couple of times and they are fine - some one gets "shot" by one of the multitude of weapons available and he will lie there in the arms of his leading lady with his hand on the wound.

it makes me wonder how many thais do know basic first aid or CPR.

I think it has to do with Thai lazyness and the mai pen rai attitude. He is dead so what. They just don't care or don't want to care. If they would, it would give them headache

Butterfy is ok, he's only bothersome if you take him seriously. :o

Back on topic, prob not best thing to do, but I think the divers were just happy to have found the body.

Agree....probably happy to have found it so that funeral rites could be held and closure given to the family....

It doesnt say how long the child was in the water ..... doing CPR on a person that has been in the water for more than about 10 mins would be a waste of time....remember CPR rarely revives someone....it is used to keep the heart and blood moving and to keep the lungs working preventing damage to organs until further medical attention can be given.....If someone has been dead for a while then there is no hope for revival.

Had a situation at work where a guy had hung himself....the time from him being last seen alive to discovery was just 13 mins....we started CPR on him and kept it up till the ambulance arrived....they came in and yelled "keep going"....when we handed over to them they stopped all resuscitation...saying it was too late.

maybe I was not clear in my last post - I believe they should have started CPR on the rescue diver who drowned during the retrieval process.

Thanks for clarifying that. I too thought you were referring to the child. Where did this happen ?

Many people have no idea of how to properly do CPR. You see it in the movies everyday. I laugh every time I see an actor slam his fist into the victims chest "Live ###### you, Live !"

I took a fairly intensive Industrial First Aid Course many years ago. 8 hours of classroom work plus 2-3 hours of homework every day for 2 weeks.

The final test was 4 parts, Minor Injury, Major Injury, Oxygen Therapy and CPR. You had to score a minimum of 75% in each test to pass and get a "C" certificate. 95% in each test to get an "A" ticket (which I had).

My father had the same course. One one job site a guy keeled over dead. Dad performed CPR on him for close to 30 minutes, until they got to the hospital. The doctor at the Emergency Room looked at the guy and pronounced him dead (didn't even bother trying to revive him). Turns out that basically the guys heart had burst, and even if it had happened at the door to the hospital, he would have still died.

Very insensitive on the part of the divers, regardless. Save the high-fives for bringing them back alive.

Sorry Stu M....I too took it the other way....yes for the rescue diver....CPR should have been initiated.....for the child....probably not depending on the time lines.
