British International Driving License

As long as you are a tourist driving a rent-a-car from a reputable company there should be no problem.

Different, however, for privately owned vehicles. Usually the insurance certificate has a clause in the small print, that a valid Thai DL is needed.

For your insurance to cover you when driving a private car in Thailand you need a Thai driver's licence. You may legally drive in Thailand with an International Driving Permit issued by the approved agency (e.g., AA) in the jurisdiction (e.g., UK) that issued your base driver's license...but your insurance will not cover you.

Don't forget letter from immigration stating you are a resident (some people have said they took their Chanute, but a letter from immigration is the rule) , and a medical certificate from a clinic 100bht. (I did)!
