''Dam hua uey'' (Northern Thai)... meaning to show respect to the village and family elders by presenting them with offerings, often accompanied by having them tie the sacred cord upon ones wrist for good luck.

many of the hill-tribes, and migrants from Burma, are not only poor but also frugal. You often see the kids with a plastic bag full of boiled rice, and perhaps something with it to add flavour. They bite a corner and suck it bit by bit throughout the day whilst the parents are away working. Here a Palaung teenage girl, still acts out of habit, even though she is dressed fashionably and it is festival time so plenty for all to eat....

waiting for 'customers'..... this palaung hill-tribe village is at the end of a road, so no through traffic....just fighting amongst themselves...until this odd farang arrived when they all took the opportunity to give him a soaking...
