Songkran day four: Still zero road deaths in Phuket

PHUKET: -- Four days into the “Seven Days of Danger” road accident period surrounding Songkran, Phuket is still mercifully free of deaths. Yesterday (April 14) there were just three reported accidents on the island, with three people injured.

The latest numbers bring the totals for the four days to 18 reported accidents with 19 people injured.

Elsewhere in Thailand, the road toll continues to soar, with 451 accidents yesterday, leading to 43 deaths and a 494 people hospitalised. The nationwide toll so far is 216 deaths and 2,020 injured, the Bangkok Post reported.

Manager Online reported that Phang Nga had the highest death toll among the Andaman provinces on Saturday, with two reported dead.

Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan, concerned that revellers will soon be on the road again in large numbers, on their way home or back to places where they work, such as Phuket, has ordered officials to put more effort into reducing the death toll.

“I want to insist that those provinces which have a high number of accidents and deaths find measures to prevent more loss of life,” he was quoted as saying.

That injury statistic is fanciful. You can likely multiply that by 50 for it to be more accurate. Most injuries don't get reported. I know of 4 people that were injured in separate motor bike accidents over the weekend that weren't reported.

The biggest difference for Phuket this year was the single day of Songkranning (except for perhaps on Bangla Rd.) vs. previous years multiple days and the cool wet weather. Another way Thailand guilds the lily is by only reporting deaths that occur before being admitted to the hospital. If you die from your injuries later, as many do, they don't record the cause as motorcycle or car accident.

No, that has been the same already for years and years.

That's 'cuz they're all dying in Prachuap on the way there. Pran Buri was an absolute disaster on Friday, the last day I was more than a klick from my house.
