Bkk Or Auh Duty Free - Which One Is Cheaper

Featured Replies

Some friends going back to Europe and want to buy some booze, cigarettes and parfume. Flight from BKK via AUH. Which duty free is cheaper?

I haven't been to AUH, as I fly the opposite way to my homeland. However, I can tell you that the Duty Free in Thailand is horrible. It is cheaper to walk outside of the airport and buy whatever you need at 7-11 in my experience. So, I would probably hold out for anywhere that is NOT BKK!!

Indeed, the days of duty free have gone.

Years ago (20? 30?) duty free was cheaper, today it is just another trap for travelers.

The best thing to do nowadays is to buy everything outside the airport at some cheap discount shop and laugh at the duty free shops and their ridiculous prices.

AUH - that way you do not risk being arrested for shoplifting.

AUH - Duty free in the Gulf is generally some of the cheapest in the world. Although that may be because Duty in Gulf countries is generally some of the most expensive.

But compared to Bangkok it's a bargain.

Complete rubbish. 1l of Tanqueray Gin at BKK 650 Baht outside the airport 750ml 850 baht. Carton of Cigarettes BKK 575 baht outside the airport 900 baht.

To the OP be careful about security at AUH if you buy liquids in BKK (over 100ml) then transfer flights, not sure what the rules are in AUH but certainly cant transit through an EU airport with liquids bought at BKK even if sealed in a bag.

What RabC says is correct. Liquids over 100 ml are best bought on the 2nd leg of your yourney if you travel via a transit airport.

On top of that duty free in AUH is way cheaper than BKK.

Yes, never buy liquids of any kind on 1st leg if you will have to transit!
