All the world's is a stage, And all the men and women merely players.

Sometimes people use these forums as stages as if they are Broadway superstars.

If I were a rich man,

Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.

All day long I'd biddy biddy bum.

If I were a wealthy man.

I wouldn't have to work hard.

Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum.

If I were a biddy biddy rich,

A lot of the threads remind me of reading the Penthouse Forum when I was a wee whacker lad.

At first, they're fascinating, to think that people actually write in about their "experiences". (Not to mention that people actually do that stuff) But after reading a hundred or so, it becomes apparent that the writing style is a little too consistent....

If you're sitting behind an anonymous account, tossing out a fictitious persona that claims to have gotten rich by inventing rubber bands, why not "put yourself up to be torn to threads"? You get to rag on others as much as they rag on you - or more accurately, on Dash Riprock, who has more money than God and a winkie and infinite wisdom to go with it- and the TV hit counter keeps spinning.

It's a win-win-win. Especially on a boring day.

what the hell are you on about ?

He means that a lot of posters are lying and not successful at all.

Compared to some of my neighbour's up country I am an extremely rich man, compared to some Thai people that also have homes in what some TV posters hilariously call nakorn nowhere I am not so well off.

Bottom line is I am happy, can provide well for my family and earn good money. Wether that comfort will continue in old age who knows.

I am an entirely self made millionaire (AUD) and retired to Thailand at 45.

I never brag, but I am happy to give the facts of my life straight up.

I think you are bragging.

Clearly. Why do people do that? To write an entire post, boasting

about their accomplishments (if even true), and then say near the end "I

never brag." Amazing.

I will never forget a sign posted on the wall of an old pub in England, it read, "Sometimes you have to listen to a person for a very long time before you realise that they have nothing to say".

We have all had the misfortune of sitting next to one of these characters, those that are these characters are none the wiser anyway so no harm done.

I think it's amusing, memorable ones I have read include.

The Brit with millions.

The Aussie who couldn't pay his rent.

The German gold-bug with the multi-lingual gardener and 100 air-con units.

There must be some more.

Over a period of time regular readers, I think, soon have their ''thoughts'' about certain posters smile.png , though many have been wrong about me, I mean the picture in their head is way different to the guy l really am.laugh.png

I like the story about the Oz bilionaire. He was at a casino and some rich American was boasting About how how was worth 10 million dollars?

The guy then said I'll toss you for it and the yank left immediately.

I am frankly amazed at the amount of negative, cynical, seemingly jealous responses to people here who claim they have money, to various degrees. And really you don't have to claim you have much money to get a lot of attacks on this forum.

Certainly, there are people who live here, post here, who have a good amount of wealth. Why one would consider this bragging, is strange to me, because this is an anonymous forum, so unless one is just trolling for the hell of it, and I think very few people do this, how is that bragging exactly? Every now and then, some poster comes off as very arrogant, but really, if they just arrived here, and do have money, do still have Western standards for everything, what else should we expect? And there are certain posters who have not yet lived here, so are even more out-of touch with what really life is like here.

Personally, I would not have been able believe, in my wildest dreams, that I would think or talk about money, in the ways I do now, after 9-10 years in Thailand. I think it has been a good thing for me, to learn to appreciate money, in ways I would have never thought about, if I never lived here and for so long. I think, for the rest of my life, I will never be able to piss away money, in ways I did most of life, without a thought, and that I did used to think poorly on people who seemed "cheap" in the past (I am not including local Thai people exactly in my consideration but they still have had some effect on my thoughts).

I actually never think people are just making up lies in this regard, like speaking of "Homeownship" for example. I believe his story, and I certainly believe people like "Naam" and am happy we have people like this on our forum. He adds a lot of good info to this forum, is willing to help people if you ask (not with loans as far as I know, but with advice ...and I even read he invites many people to his house ..if I ever end up in his neck of the woods, I might even look him up and try to visit him, now that I have read he seems to accept visitors.)

I have never really understood why people here get so upset, angry, jealous, act like they can't believe it, etc. I would say one of the ONLY things I could be grateful to Thailand for ....would be teaching me to respect money in a whole new way, teaching me talking about it doesn't need to be taboo (except that I think most THAI people lie about their money, wealth and many other things so I am not including them per se in this evaluation.) And I have learned one HUGE lesson, and that would be that it is OKAY to say "I can't afford XXX." Before I thought that was a shameful comment and it had never come out of my mouth! Unless it was about something considered ridiculous for my social/economic group ...for example, I could admit that I cannot afford a beach front house in Malibu or a G4 jet.. But nobody would think I could so what was the problem with admitting that? I would never have said, I can't afford any restarunt, vacation, Chanel luggage, luxury watches, good cars, things like this. But also, I have to admit that my finances have changed drastically, over the years I have lived here, in a negative way of course. But on the other hand, I SAVE more money than the average American family earns per year, each and every year I have lived here. And I still have to pay taxes to my country..

So, am I POOR? I am not sure. I never think of myself as poor, probably more to do with my past life, and situation, rather then what is real for now. In some ways I think I am poor ...things changed for me due to the economy these last 6 years. On the other hand, I am more well off then many people in the US, probably still in the first 1% as I used to be. But that is based on assets and not so much on income lately.

I don't understand, really, why people like Homeownershp, lives in Thailand. If I was him, I would move to many other places, I could list 100 places better than Thaialnd, if money wasn't an object. Obviously, he must feel some attaction to here, that I cannot understand, and I would guess he will MOVE somewhere better, eventually, after he learns more about Thailand. But Thailand will be some kind of good education for him, in both positive and negative ways, and he will probably learn better what he really appreciates in life, and he should have the money to afford an appropriate change. Lucky him, and I am sure many of us wish we had the same choices.

We all have different situations. Some of use have big assets, and some don't. Some of us have decent pensions, disability payments, or I am not sure what, payments that will continue for life, that are enough to get by here in a decent way. Some of us have big assets, and may or may not have big income. The best people, probably have big assets and good incomes both.

Also we should consider people's age, past life, etc, before we decide if they are rich or not rich, poor, or middle class. If you have been able to work and have no serious problems, and are 65, and from a first world country, I think you should have a certain amount of money, that would be very comfortable here in Thailand, and that isn't a huge accomplishment. However, if you are 30 and have earned, or amassed the same financial situation as say, "Naam" has, then well, you are quite ahead of the game and should be very proud.

I am reasonably proud of myself, because 1( I am a woman, and we all know that women generally earn less. 2) I stopped working at 38 years old. 3) I have more money than most people my age, who are married in the US (so really, what they would have upon divorce would be half of whatever they claim to have (this info is mostly due to shows like "Suze Orman", and various news reports), 3) I spent an abnormal time, compared to average, in university, which I also paid for myself. I have had an illness which has had bad effects on my life, and caused huge problems with work/school (and without ever going on any government help, disability, unemployment insurance, etc. 4) I have had to spend a big portion of my income on healthcare, and still do, and wil always have to do, this started when I was in my 20s.

Some of you golf 3 times a week, and do many other fun things, but dont' have serious medical expenses, like I do. Some people here, live on less than just my medical expenses per month. Are you 65, golf 3 times a week, spend big money on your sex life? Well I spend big money on my medical things every month, and support a child alone. Are you richer than me? Maybe not, but have more disposable income. Or maybe you do, maybe you have 5-10 times more than me, but if you were sick most of your adult life and quit working in your 30s how much would you have now?

Personally, I am happy to hear about how much certain people have. I wish all of us could have total freedom, whatever money that might need to be, for each person. I have been in both places, I think, having more money than I needed, much more, and having less money, and having medium money, and being happy or not happy, based on none of that, but only being happy when I was less sick.

Anyway, my point of this posting, is really just to say, please stop all these attacks on people who seem to have more money than you. Who cares?? When a person accomplishes certain educational points, or financial points, or whatever, we have been socialized to respect that, and I think it deserves some respect. It does not mean, that they worked harder than poorer people, personally I think farmers, in every country in the world, work harder, than I ever have, with jobs, with school, with both combined. I am sure many Issan people work harder than I ever have in my life, and if I had to do that same work, I would be dead today. Yet, yes, I still feel superior because of my advanced eduation, my money, and other things. But they may feel better than me, because they drive a better car than I do?

And one poster above, listed his life, working from a young age, etc, and some of you attacked him also. I feel really bad about that. I also, worked fulltime since I was 14, moved out of my family home at 15.5 years old, never to return, and worked my ass off to survive. And my divorced parents were/are pretty well off, in the 1/10, of 1 percent of American people. I worked at legit jobs, paid taxes, rented an apartment, finished HS on my own, started taking college courses at night, I ended up winning an award of being one of the top ten students in my school, out of something like 35,0000 students, went on to graduate school, and life.

So try to remember, that we all didn't come from the same place, but for whatever reasons, we have for now, ended up in the same place. Why feel jiealous, and if you do feel jealous, maybe you should look at yourself and find out what is causing that, and try to change it. We other people won't care, or even notice, but you will be much happier!

Ultimately, does it really matter ? We refer to these guys as the 'Billionaire Boys Club' on my other forum, and it's interesting that they are singularly obsessed with the rising price of everything in Bangkok at any given point in time - I guess you dont make a billion without counting every miserable Satang, right ? wink.png

Warren Buffett could join the forum tomorrow and I couldnt give a hoot - far more interested in people who have experienced something beyond sitting in front of a monitor looking at graphs and spreadsheets, although reading Buffett's story would seem to indicate that he does have interests well beyond the markets. Tell me you rebuilt a '67 Chevelle from the ground up or just got back from a month surfing Grajagan and I'll show a lot more interest than any combination of digits in a bank statement. thumbsup.gif
