Hi everyone...

This is definitely a wonderful board and after reading all the past postings here, I am quite surprised to learn so much about Thailand from an insider's point of view...so many things that you don't see or experience when you are there as a tourist vis-a-vis staying there.

Let me intro myself...I'm a Singaporean and frequently travels to Thailand for holidays...in fact I have been there 6 times for the last 2 mths...staying only a week per trip...have fell in love with a Thai girl (reason why I am always going back there) and we are planning to committ ourselves to a serious relationship. However, the problem we are facing is geographical seperation...

Keeping in touch with her via long distance calls is rapidly eating into my finances and travelling there every forthnight is also draining my financial capability to continue this way of meeting each other...but I want to be with her. How?

We have discussed all the possibilities of being together..she doesn't want to stay in S'pore becoz of the reputation that Thai women has in S'pore (eg. Geylang and prostitution) and also becoz of the recent SARS outbreak. Another reason is the VISA issues and the stringent yet suspicion immigration checks on her if she frequents S'pore to visit me.

Hence, it would be easier for me to go to Thailand either to look for employment or start a business. The latter is a little bit more difficult becoz of financial constraints and lack of biz contacts...maybe a year or so, I may be able to start a export biz there.

But as Dazdaz has mentioned, it is rather difficult to look for employment in Thailand. I have a S'pore university degree and 4 years of IT project management experience (Internet Banking) in DBS Bank but have quitted my job in Jan so as to start a small biz venture with my friend which has failed recently.

Have been trying to find a job via the websites but efforts are furtile. Have also contacted my ex-VP to help me look for a job with Thai Danu Bank but he has not responded since..looks like I have either to continue to pull strings to get a job there or go there myself to look for a job.  Have emailed a old friend of mine who is the Sales Head of a local firm in Thailand to help me find employment and will be hoping that he reverts with a favourable response....crossing my fingers...

At this point in time, it seems that the best way to get employment in Thailand is to (1) find employment in your country that has a HQ in Thailand first and after working for 2 years or so, request for a transfer there..or (2) pull strings to get a job there.

I agree with Dazdaz about setting up a pre-visa forum so as to help those with no ideas at all in their search for employment in Thailand...all the postings that I have read so far here either contains people with capital to start biz or retire or people with jobs secured in Thailand but wondering how to extend VISAs...

BTW, has Thailand decided to ban people from countries affected by the SARS virus into their country yet? I am scheduled to go Bangkok on 10 April...worried that I may be quarantined when I am there...  :o

As of 2 April you can still come but you will be confined to home for 14 days according to Newspapers (up to six months jail time if you go out).  If you look sick you will be sent to isolation (photo of them painting the door bars on front page of Bangkok Post today).  Welcome! :o

Thanks lopburi3 for the update...

Huh?!? 14 days confinement indoors?? How could this be possible?!?!? I am only there for 2 weeks and I have to attend a trade seminar in the 1st week...can't expect the whole trade seminar to come to my hotel room right??

When will this be lifted? Anyone knows...?? :o

They have now modified the order to apply only to Thai citizens and ex pats.  Tourists and businessmen are now only required to wear a face mask as all times (no provision mentioned for eating) with same six months jail as max penalty.  Stay tuned.
