MCOT TV tonight reporting and showing video of some kind of explosion in the area of Ramkamhaeng 43/1. Lots of police, and what looks like the front of some storefronts blown out. Supposedly 6 people injured, including a couple seriously.

At least people were injured after what believed to be a homemade bomb exploded at a road-side shopping area on Ramkhamhaeng Road near the Ramkhaeng University Sunday night.

Police said the explosion occurred at 8:50 pm at the front of Soi Ramkhamhaeng 43/1.

Bomb squad officers were checking the scene. Police said nails were found scattered at the spot so the bomb was believed to be a homemade one.

The blast damaged two shops.

An eyewitness told police that the explosion happened at a garbage bin.

The area was sealed off by police.

BANGKOK: -- Police arrested a former teacher suspected of planting a homemade bomb at road-side shopping area on Ramkhamhaeng Road that exploded Sunday night, injuring at least six people.

Police did not give details about the suspect, saying he is a former teacher and is living on a condominium building on Soi 43/1 where the explosion occurred. The soi is near the Ramkhaeng University

Police said the explosion occurred at 8:50 pm at the front of the soi and the man was arrested at about 10 pm.

A bomb built with nails seems pretty clearly aimed at causing injury...assuming those details are correct.

Where's the part about "not intended to injure" coming from? I don't see any reference to that language in The Nation's posts in this thread...

BANGKOK, May 27 -- Seven persons were hurt in an explosion in the Thai capital Sunday evening.

Police said at least seven people were wounded in explosion at Ramkhamhaeng Soi 43/1 near a beauty salon Sunday night. They believed the incident stemmed from a conflict with a vendor and that there was no involvement with southern problems.

The bomb was placed in a garbage bin near a beauty salon at the entrance of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 43/1. Two shops were damaged by the explosion, while the wounded were mostly traders and were sent to hospitals.

Huamark police station Superintendent Pol Col Narongrit Phromsawas said that forensic experts and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit inspected the scene and investigators were collecting information and evidence.

Pol Gen Pansiri Prapawat, deputy police chief, said that according to the initial investigation, the incident stemmed from a personal conflict between vendors and there was no involvement with the problems in the southernmost provinces.

Meanwhile, National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanathabut said police detained a suspect initially believed to be a foreigner for questioning in connection with the bombing, but no nationality information has been released.

Lt Gen Paradorn said investigation is underway. Police have not ruled out any possible motive including personal conflict and problems in the South.

He will meet the prime minister this afternoon and the issue will be raised at a meeting of senior government officials.

The area was cordoned off, causing traffic congestion on Monday morning. (MCOT online news)

BANGKOK, May 27, 2013 (AFP) - A bomb hidden near rubbish bins in a busy suburban Bangkok shopping area left seven people wounded, Thai police said on Monday.

The homemade device exploded at about 9 pm (1400 GMT) on Sunday in Ramkhamhaeng, a university area of the Thai capital, said Police colonel Narongrit Promsawan.

"Police are investigating to see what caused the explosion and who were involved. A preliminary investigation of the scene found many nails were part of the device," he told AFP.

Narongrit said police did not think the bombing was part of a broader campaign.

He said none of those hurt was in a serious condition.

Deputy government spokeswoman Sunisa Lertpakawat said security forces were urgently probing who was behind the blast.

"It is now under investigation, which may take time, but not too long because security for Thais and foreigners is a very important matter for this government," she told AFP

BANGKOK, May 27 - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra instructed security agencies to step up security measures in Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng area following last night's blast which injured seven people. Police are still unable to locate any suspect.

Government spokesman Theerat Rattanasevi said the prime minister expressed concern over the bombing near a beauty salon at the entrance of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 43/1 and instructed security agencies to tighten security there as it is a community area and is the location of a renowned university.

He said officers doing the initial investigation believe the bombing might be motivated by a business conflict, but police have not ruled out possibility of political conflict, terrorism and the southern insurgency.

Forensic police inspected the bombing scene last night and found dozens of nails and metal scattered in the area. They are now seeking video footage from the closed circuit televisions installed in the area.

Dismissing reports that a suspect was nabbed, Hua Mark Police Station superintendent Pol Col Narongrit Promsawat said no suspect has been arrested, while a Myanmar suspect earlier detained for questioning was freed last night as it has been established that he was simply a bystander.

Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Pansiri Prapawat said police have been instructed to speed up investigation on the case and step up security measures so that such an incident will not recur.

He said a remote-controlled bomb was used in the attack and a number of nails were part of its component. The blast was large enough to be life-threatening.

Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha commented that the army is waiting for the police investigation report, while the Internal Security Operations Command will assess the incident to determine whether it is connected to southern insurgency or not.

Erawan Emergency Medical Centre reported, as of midday Monday, three persons have been hospitalised, while the rest already returned home. (MCOT online news)

The only other case scenario could be about the announced crackdown on copyrights violation. If this is the case it would go high up in the corruption hierarchy.

For example a person or group has ordered fakes(could go from hundreds of thousand to millions of Baht), the middlemen delivered, vendors backed off and didn't pay out of fear of getting caught, - boom!

There are hundreds of cams in that area and normally the detectives there're doing a good job. - One more time please.
