Fair enough Brit but your the one making the arguement so why should I have to google.

The article on old man Kennedy doesn't say much except that he was a racist anti semite. His reputation wasn't great although he may have been libelled by the British secret service because of his support for Irish republicanism. The article didn't state anything about him owning Nazi stock. But we'll let that pass.

The stuff on Prescott Bush is common knowledge. He was in cahoots with the nazis. He only stopped when the US government shut him down.

It was a long time ago.

Amazing how the Bush family could have survived after Prescott was seized of all his assets by the US congress. He must have pulled a Thaksin. Switzerland ?

There is a strong tradition of anti-semitism from the Irish, so you are correct, this was very well possible (it has been documented before). That said, it doesn't excuse any better the crimes of Prescott Bush.

<big snip>

I do believe we were the last to enter. I wish we would've gotten in sooner.

...there was still some money to be made...interestingly Bush's Grandfather did plenty of business with Nazi Germany. Don't want to put oil in the fire, this just as a historical fact. :o

What's your point? One guy made money off the Nazis and you are going to condemn every airmen who bombed Berlin and every G.I. to shoot a German soilder to being a Nazi? You didn't take any math or logic courses in school did you?

Not Irish, Catholics.

How about that America just didn't want to go to war.

Is that at all possible? :o

Nope ! As I posted in another thread, the Pres actually considered precipitating a war with Japan as a way of jump-starting the economy, as his New Deal plan wasn't producing the results he'd hoped for.

After reading that, it kind of makes you wonder about the whole Pearl Harbour thing. Did he know (or suspect) beforehand that the Japanese would attack, and waited for it to happen (to give him the high morale ground of responding to the attack, instead of the low morale ground he would have been on, had he started the war).

Reminds me of another story, about how the US finally got involved in WW I (3 years after it started). :D

Sorry man, can't go there with you. If you read Ten Years In Japan a comtemporary record drawn from the diaries and private and offcial paper of Joesph C. Crew United States Ambassador to Japan (1932-1942) you will see many times FDR could've started our part in this war a long time before Pearl Habor. Up until 1936 he orders were to keep the peace with Japan, including not making a fuss over the attack by a Japanses plane on a US vessel in China that could've started it right there. On page 165 entry February 11, 1936 he writes about Senator Pittman telling Japan off.

"I can't help feeling that just once in a while it is healthy to let the Japanese know that a fire still exists in what they may believe to be an extinct volcano. It may tend to slow down their acquisitive program and somewhat to implement our diplomacy, Therefore I am not at all so angry with Pittman as I ought to be."

He was frustrated that the Japanese didn't want to listen to reason when American and themselves had problems to iron out, though he still supported FDR's policy of not going to war with Japan. He was willing to allow the Japanese to be insulted by Pittman and for the US to be more intimidating towards Japan to keep out of war.

If it weren't for the Vandals, Visigoths, Galgamacs or whatever, the English would still be Romans. Lets see how far back we can carry this. :o

I didn't say the President, I said the country.

FDR didn't go to war earlier because of lack of public support. Correct? :o

Didn´t he jump start the first war by sinking that spanish ship...? I forget the details. :o

OK, I'll go with that. I made the mistake of thinking that the Pres did what was best for the country (silly me :o ).

Yes, the Pres thought about starting a war with Japan, but didn't because the public as a whole supported an isolationist position.

Then again, if he really had wanted to get into it earlier, I'm sure he could have convinced the public it was a good idea. All he would have had to do is start slagging Tojo/Hirohito in the media and claim that they were bad guys. They already had proof of that, as Japan had already invaded Korea and China.

Bill O'Reilly and the Faux News network didn't exist then, but I'm sure he could have still got the message out. :D

Hmmmm, should I have FRENCH FRIES for lunch today ? (just to keep on topic :D )

It was suggested that the US didn't enter the war in order to profit from it.

I brought up the possibility that American citizens in general just wanted to stay out of it, but I realize that FDR felt otherwise. :D

He liked French fries by the way.

A thread entitled, 'French Fries' currently running at 12 pages. And people thought the 'Last Word' thread was dumb. :o:D

I like them hot with salt and malt vinegar. :o

nope, smothered in gravy

poutine.jpg

add cheese and you get poutine which is Quebecois for "instant heart attack"

You need history class boy! I think you are thinking of the Spanish/American war which was closer to 1900 and under the first Roosevelt, that is Teddy.

So.........reading into this thread, I gather that chips, French Fries or whatever you would like to call them, were invented by the Romans, who than sold them to the Nazi's via the White House. Or did I loose something in translation?

I think we all lost something in translation.

I take this is your outing as a soapdodger, is it? :D

I first tried them at an English style fish and chips place in San Francisco that wrapped them in newspaper and everything.

Been hooked ever sense. :o
