Maternity leave for civil servants to be extended to 180 days

BANGKOK, 5 May 2013 (NNT)- In its effort to encourage breastfeeding for newborns for the first 6 months of their lives, the Public Health Ministry has adopted a policy allowing female civil servants with newborn babies to take as long as 180 days to breastfeed them.

The policy will extend the period which a mother is allowed to take leave from work from 90 days to 180 days. However, the privilege will only be applied to civil servants.

Deputy Health Minister Dr. Cholanan Srikeaw said the purpose of the extension is to enable mothers to breastfeed their newborns for as long as they could, given the mother’s milk is essential to the growth and development of a baby. Around 944 workplaces have already allowed their female employees to pump their breast milk at work so they can feed their babies when they go home.

Male civil servants will also be able to take 30 days of paid leave to help nurture their newborns instead of the previous paid leave of 15 days. The measures will certainly promote stronger family bonds, according to Dr. Cholanan.

BANGKOK, 5 June 2013 (NNT) – The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, on the occasion of World Environment Day 2013, held an event under the theme of “Think, Eat, Save” to raise public awareness regarding environment and green lifestyle.

The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, has hosted an event for the World Environment Day 2013 under the concept of “Think, Eat, Save”. The idea is to have a green life style that preserves the environment. It encourages the public to become more aware of the environmental impact of their food choices resulting from their imbalance in lifestyles. According to the department, food waste is an enormous drain on natural resources and a contributor to negative environmental impacts.

According to Director General of the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion Jatuporn Burutpat, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has provided guidelines for participating nations to follow, such as promoting the production of eco-friendly products and reducing activities that harm the ecological system.

In order to address the current environmental problems, cooperation from all sides is needed, said the Director General. He also suggested possible solutions such as creating a network to promote environmental information, strict related law enforcement, and encouraging business operators to show social responsibilities by incorporating environmentally friendly activities in their operations.

He urged that all Thais slowly adjust their behaviors. By inducing small environmentally friendly activities into their daily lives, Thailand's environment would surely improve.

AEC Trade and Investment 2015 seminar to promote investment opportunity in Thailand

BANGKOK, 5 June 2013 (NNT)-The Ministry of Commerce is holding a seminar entitled "AEC Trade and Investment 2015" today to help Thai investors and foreign chambers of commerce learn about investment opportunities after ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) has been formed.

Many foreign investors are reportedly in the dark about how the investment landscape will be for Thailand once it is part of the AEC. They suggested during the seminar that the Thai government clarify investment procedures in order to increase their confidence in the country.

It will help them decide whether they should invest in Thailand or turn their attention elsewhere, given it currently takes as long as 6 months to establish a company in Thailand. They would like to know if they will be offered an easier path to doing that after Thailand enters the AEC.

Today’s seminar offers a platform for both Thai and foreign participants to exchange and share their thoughts regarding the AEC. According to the Department of Trade Negotiations, the tariff rates for most products traded among ASEAN members will be exempted except for coffee, dried coconut, flowers, and potatoes exported to Thailand.

However, the Department claims the collection of tariff on certain products would be still subject to negotiations between member countries. Foreign labors would also find it easier to seek job opportunities in other ASEAN countries. Agreements have been made between ASEAN and several countries such as China, India, Australia, New Zealand and Japan to provide and exchange business information among one another.

Attorney General to study appeal against security chief's reinstatement

BANGKOK, June 5 – The Prime Minister’s Office is waiting for recommendations from the Attorney General and an ad hoc committee before deciding whether to appeal the Administrative Court decision reinstating Thawil Pliensri to lead the National Security Council (NSC), a senior official said today.

Tongthong Chandransu, permanent secretary to the PM’s Office, said the Attorney General should give its conclusion on the court’s verdict next week after which a decision can be made on the appeal.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has 30 days to appeal last Thursday’s court ruling on the reinstatement of Mr Thawil who was transferred to an inactive post in September 2011. The court said Mr Thawil must be returned to his former position as NSC secretary general.

Mr Tongthong said an ad hoc committee was simultaneously set up to study and give its opinion on the case. The committee comprises the secretaries general of the Civil Service Commission and the Council of State, and an Attorney General’s representative.

He said he could not comment on the case until he receives a report from the Attorney General but assured that the appeal, if made, would be within the 30-day deadline. (MCOT online news)

Govt to decide fate of emergency decree in South
By English News

BANGKOK, June 5 – The Thai government is reviewing enforcement of the highly-criticised emergency decree in the country's far South, due to expire on June 19, and decide if it will be revoked or partially extended, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said today.

He said the final decision on the emergency decree depends on an evaluation of the southern situation by related state agencies, the army in particular.

The evaluation will be based on three factors: the southern residents’ readiness on self-protection, areas with less violence and residents’ demand for abolition of the emergency decree.

A preliminary report includes five districts under the three factors: Kapho district in Pattani, Betong and Kabang districts in Yala, and Waeng and Sukhirin districts in Narathiwat.

Mr Chalerm said he supports the peace talks between the Thai authorities and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) movement but the government may have to adjust the dialogue procedure if the next round of talks on June 13 shows no progress.

“The BRN’s five proposals in the previous talks were nonsense. They should change their representatives if there’s no progress,” said Mr Chalerm.

The deputy prime minister met this afternoon with security officials responsible for peace-keeping in Thailand’s deep South. The emergency decree tops the agenda.

He said two working committees will separately visit the South this Friday and on June 15. Mr Chalerm will lead the second team for the field trip. (MCOT online news)
