14 Lions, Countless Other Animals Seized During Raid On Bangkok House

Fourteen lions, countless other animals seized during raid on Khlong Sam Wa house
By Coconuts Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- During a raid earlier today on a house in Soi Hatairat 39 in the Khlong Sam Wa district, police found between two and three-hundred wild animals. Among the wildlife seized were 14 lions, tigers, leopards, hornbills and turtles.

Authorities said that the house served as a temporary shelter for animals that had been smuggled in from abroad.

The animals would wait at the house before being sent out to buyers both inside Thailand and in neighboring countries.

Police believe that the house was part of a massive network of wildlife traders, seeing as those involved in this crime had been convicted in similar cases before.

Customs is having a bad week aren't they.

How do you smuggle a live lion?

Not exactrly something that you can stick down your pants.

Customs, as far as I am aware are even more crooked than The BIB.

I suppose this is a genuine Hubwhistling.gif

Can't stick them down your pants but maybe they put them into condoms first and stick them up their rectum to smuggle through customs?

How many times do they need to be caught before they are put out of business. sorry, forgot the mighty Baht is the ultimate get out of jail free card for those involved in organised crime.

Khlong Sam Wa

I think I heard a roar when I passed by there once, but put it down to the chili I had that evening.

I suppose this is a genuine Hubwhistling.gif

Thailand is a hub of the international black market in protected animals.

The above is a NZ news quote.

The joke about the elephants may shed some light on the question:

Q - How do you hide a live elephant from the police in the middle of BKK?

A - Easy to hide him behind a 500 Baht note!

I'm guessing the neighbours are all deaf if this has only come to light now

God they must have got bored of waiting around. Isn't it about time Samsung sorted out this problem, and developed phones for bored animals that wait?

Did you ever see any lions strolling around?

They believe this one house is only part of a massive network. How many lions are there in Thailand then?

What a ridiculous comment on such a serious subject. How is he going to see lions 'strolling' around?

Everybody knows lions only ever go out for a stroll when it's pitch black at night.

They talk about the import of lions as though this is an everyday occurrence.

Note to customs, please do not release lions into the wilds of Bangkok.

Thai police discover 14 white lions at Bangkok home

BANGKOK, June 10, 2013 (AFP) - Thai police said Monday they had discovered more than 200 live wild animals including monkeys, tortoises and 14 white lions during a raid on a house in the capital Bangkok.

Two Thai men, including the owner of a pet shop at the city's popular Chatuchak market, were charged with illegal wildlife trading. If convicted they face up to four years in jail and a 40,000 baht ($1,300) fine.

"We received a complaint about the smell from the neighbours and after investigating we discovered the animals hidden there," Police Colonel Ek Ekasart told AFP.

He said the lions were believed to have been brought into the country using permits for sales to zoos, but instead offered to private buyers.
The two suspects deny involvement in illegal wildlife trade. One was found guilty of the same charge four years ago.

Once the legal process is completed, some of the animals could be released into the wild and others sent to zoos, police said.

Thailand has a reputation as a hub of international wildlife smuggling to feed strong demand in Asia for unusual pets and traditional medicines made from animal parts.
