The European Parliament on Wednesday adopted a motion condemning “the grave violations of human rights and the violence perpetrated against Rohingya Muslims†in western Burma’s Arakan State. It deplored “the failure of the government to protect the Rohingya from organized violence†and called on Naypyidaw “to do everything in their power to protect Rohingya Muslims from violent actions.†The EU parliament also urged Thailand to let UN refugee agencies access 1700 Rohingya asylum seekers being kept in “inhumane detentionâ€. Arakan State has experienced bloody clashes between Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingyas, which have displaced 140,000 people, mostly Muslims, and left almost 200 dead.
