This morning it's one of the extreme full moon low tides of this year, so I used the opportunity to walk on the beach. I got up 5 in the morning to walk on the north-western side of Samui where the ocean will be so low that the sea-floor is exposed nearly 500m out from the beach.

Due to my clumsiness, I managed to drop my phone in the water, but quickly grabbed it out again. It was still working, but there's some moisture and condensation on the camera lens, so no more pics.

Then, after a while after a healthy breakfast in Nathon, I was walking past the river about 300m outside Nathon Hospital, but due to the low tides, there's only a trickle of water. I felt that the sand may be unstable so I took on my sandals. The water looked to be only 1 feet deep, but when I stepped in the middle, my legs suddenly sunk into the sand and my whole body fell into the water. Fortunately since I had my shoes on, I didn't sink so quickly and barely managed to wade my way across the water. If I didn't have put on my shoes, I would have sunk deeper and faster and would have surely become stuck in the quicksand.

This could have been real dangerous since there were no people around there at all. The area is basically exposed seafloor due to the extreme low tides.

My phone, however went dead. When I came home, my local phone shop told it's unrepairable. At least I'm still alive and I'll definitely remember to avoid that spot from now on.

I felt my whole life in rewind after that experience.

The problem with the phone is that when the water dries out, the salt and other minerals crystallise and damage the circuits. the only possible remedy is to rinse it immediately and thoroughly with distilled water. Then leave to dry out completely This works sometimes but not always.

Lucky escape from the quicksand

Hey Mole - glad that you are still with us.

New phone - 1,000 baht (maybe). New Mole - impossible.

Live every day as if it was your last - and no more going near quicksand!

Safest is always to stay at home, I would avoid going to such dangerous place in the future if I were you. Glad you made it back safe this time.. :)

Opposite common belief you can not drown in quicksand as your body is more buoyant.

You'll only get stuck 70% down.

And then the tide comes in. sad.png

That's why they call him Mole.

Remove battery & sim card & anything else you can. Rinse thoroughly in distilled or RO water a few times. Drain by swinging at arms length to get out any other moisture.

Then put in fridge for a few days, near the air exit from the cooling coils. When you take it out put it quickly into a plastic bag until it warms up. (Put in sunshine, if you can find some)

Then reassemble & test.

This is best chance, my guess 50 / 50 -

Oh, and welcome back!

Last time I did something similar (dropped in the toilet bowl) my phone stopped working. I put it on the radiator and forgot about it for a month. It suddenly sprang back to life one day even though it hadn't been charged on that time.

I got stuck in quicksand once on a jungle trek. It was a spot where a very small stream entered a larger one. I stepped across the sand near the junction and dropped instantly to about mid thigh. I didn't sink any further, but I couldn't get out on my own at all. My buddies had a good laugh but wouldn't help. Finally some villager helped me out. If I had been alone I don't know how long I would have been stuck there. I couldn't even lift my legs an inch.
