Pesticide concern: Packed Thai rice checked for contamination

Is it possible to buy rice from outside Thailand in the shops here?

Cant remember seeing any but it would certainly be my choice.

I doubt it. I think any rice imported from outside would end up under the rice pledging scheme.

I read just five minutes ago that police have seized a truck with 30 tons of smuggled rice from Cambodia.

I always buy organically grown rice, whole grain as well, 270 Baht for 5 kg. Hope its worth the extra money...

I wonder why many people complain now - and before this news was published the majority never cared about how the rice was planted/treated or stored...

the rotten contaminated rice

will be given free to farmers

that will feed it to their chickens and pigs

and that will be highly contaminated soon

many new cases of cancer in the future to expect

but hey, that might as well be the government population control scheme

where do they buy that pesticide ? they should ban it from being made worldwide bah.gif

If you want weevils in your cornflakes, great. This stuff has been used worldwide forever with no issues whatsoever.

Literally every foodstuff in the world is fumigated with this stuff.

even organic?

IFTF writes that in the face of an intensifying debt cycle, many rice farmers are moving toward organic agriculture away from the industrial methods of rice production that depend on hybrid seeds, fertilizer, agricultural machinery, and other high production costs

According to the Director-General, the organic rice village is one the Rice Department’s major projects, and two such villages have already been established in Phattalung and Buriram provinces. The aim is for farmers to adapt their production processes, using the least amount of chemicals, thus leaving no chemical residues on harvested crops.

Maybe so.

The Dems spent a lot of tax payers money on promoting Thailand as the ASEAN hub of organic rice production. It is a legitimate and effective method of boosting farmers income and breaking the debt cycle. Its now another victim of the rice scam.

Haven't studied organics, but organic produce ordinarily isn't shipped all over the world or stored for massive lengths of time.

Organic is a very broad statement mind you. Shouldn't it be grown on land that has been synthetic fertiliser and pesticide free for 5 years? It is incredibly difficult to produce food in Thailand using only natural pesticides.

I am very sceptical about that statement in Thailand.

When spraying a few sacks of rice they would probably take less care than they would in spraying hotel rooms. (Downtown Inn)

what a tragedy that was.

ironically, the initial police "investigation" found those people died from food poisoning.

""The FDA is now considering listing rice products as a 'controlled product' under the Food Act, as the agency would be able to monitor the food safety for this product," Boonchai said."

Now there's a novel idea wink.png

As though monitoring the most widely consumed FOOD in the country shouldn't be the responsibilty of the FOOD and drug adminstration.

Certainly, but you wouldn't be able to tell by the packaging.

The pesticide companies have a lot of influence world wide.   Lots of problems up in Fang but look what happened to the video telling the world of the issue.......

I'm glad that some Thai farmers are trying to go organic and I really hope they are successful (and healthy)!

Good find. Looks like the link might have changed so here it is again. This scene is all too common.
