PM heads to Poland and Turkey this week

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will on Wednesday leave for Poland and Turkey to boost political and economic relations with those countries.

Government spokesman Theerat Rattanasevi said the visit to Poland would be Yingluck's first to central Europe and was in response to an invitation extended by Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk during their meeting at the Asem 9 summit in Vientiane in November last year.

The visit to Poland would enhance Thailand's market in Europe as Poland, a country with high economic potential, shares borders with seven other European countries. Thailand should thus take the opportunity to use Poland as a gateway to other European nations.

During the visit, both prime ministers will witness the signing of four memoranda of understanding. Yingluck will also visit conservation projects of old towns of Poland to adjust these for Thailand.

The spokesman said after Poland, the premier would go to Turkey, which is situated in the middle between Europe and Asia and considered a new market for Thailand's trade, investment and tourism. The moderate Muslim country has an influence on other central Middle East countries. Yingluck would take the opportunity to boost bilateral cooperation.

Yingluck and her entourage leave on Wednesday to Warsaw and return to Bangkok on Saturday from Istanbul.

White masks seek help from rights commission
The Nation

CHIANG MAI: -- The white mask group from Chiang Mai filed a petition with Human Rights Commissioner Niran Pitakwatchara Monday, asking for protection of their right to freedom of expression.

The anti-government white masks filed the complaint after red-shirt supporters assaulted and beat up a white-mask group in Chiang Mai on June 14.

White-mask demonstrators had assembled at Health Park behind Chiang Mai University, while some 200 red shirts gathered at the Grand Waroros Hotel before moving to attack the white masks.

In a letter, the group called on the National Human Rights Commission to investigate the red-shirt group and the red community radio "Rak Chiang Mai 51", which they said incited people to attack the white masks.

They said police had not tried to stop the red shirts from attacking the white-mask demonstrators.
